I visited with Bill White today
He is a great guy and perfect for the job of U.S. Senator. He's just so regular and hard-working. His legacy will live long in Houston.

1. He'll be the Bluest Dog in the US Senate
If elected. He has open contempt for the progressives here in Houston. But if he's your cup of tea, I suggest plenty of sugar, because he gets bitter quickly.

2. I agree that he's not progressive
But should he win, he will at least be an improvement over KBH and Cornyn.

I'm just saying incremental change is better than the status quo.

3. If he wins it will be a fluke
He'll make a special election runoff against Dewhurst or whomever -- especially if Sharp drops his bid, which is something I expect to happen eventually. But in a low-turnout runoff special against a well-funded Puke (and whoever it happens to be will have all the money they need)?

I just don't think so.

4. I like him because he is green and very populist
He's into Smart Growth and that is a big plus for me. I watched how he handled the Katrina victims when all the political advisors said that he shouldn't accept the victims because it would hurt his political career.

So maybe he is not a total progressive, but he's going to be a helluva lot better than any others that will toss their hat into the ring, unless, of course, we're talking David Van Os. ;-)

5. He was awesome with the Katrina victims
White and Rick Noriega did an outstanding job in a very short amount of time. I need to find out more about the Smart Growth. Sounds interesting.

I previously didn't know until informed here, that White was involved with a Tom DeLay fundraiser, which is a huge red flag for me, however, I did find this on Burnt Orange report:

-snip

"White never raised money for DeLay, never contributed money to DeLay and, in fact, the invitation does not even say that White would be in attendance. It just notes that DeLay had been working with city officials like Mayor White "to improve mobility throughout their region."

Any thoughts on this? I'm still a novice with Texas politics but trying to learn. :)

johncoby2 wrote this:

After being a guest speaker at a fundraiser for Tom DeLay and giving DeLay credit for solving a toxic rail disaster which he did not deserve, DeLay screws Mayor White and Houston by not securing federal funding for light rail.

"Houston has long struggled to obtain federal funding for its light rail system, the first 7 1/2 -mile piece of which opened last year. Metro paid for that initial $324 million segment on its own after U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, wrote a provision into law barring any federal grants because the transit authority had not obtained voter approval to build rail."

However, I'm not sure if the fundraiser referred to in jc2's post is one of the ones referred to in the Burnt Orange Report. I would imagine it is one of them. The Chronicle link in jc2's post is dead now.

It sounds like it was Bill sucking up to Tom to get money for light rail, which Houston desperately needs.

Just that won't take White off my list.

But then we did get some funding (but I'm not sure what it all means). But evidently, it meant that White was effective against the bugman Hammer dude pondscum somehow.

During this era, I was more involved in my own county's politics, so I'm sure I have some catching up to do on Harris County as well. So if you hear anything, please post.

Realistically, what are the chances for getting a senator elected who is an unadulterated progressive? In Texas? Now? Not that we shouldn't try IF we have a viable candidate. (DVO DVO DVO).

7. Pete Olson
I like Bill White, but I doubt he can win. Sorry to go off topic...butttt....

Cant really post my own topic, but I am inviting people to come disrupt Pete Olson's town hall meeting today at Sartartia Middle School. Me and some friends made some signs and got lots of reality checks for the crazies that will probably show up.
