Gov. Rick Perry criticized for vetoing bills to help low-income families

AUSTIN — A children’s advocacy group today criticized Gov. Rick Perry for vetoing bills it said would have helped struggling families and called for a concerted push to reduce child poverty.

The group, begun by the late Phil Strickland of Dallas, a long-time Capitol lobbyist for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, cited a Census Bureau estimate that some 1.6 million Texas children, or nearly 1 out of every 4, lived in households below the federal poverty line. To be considered poor, a family of four can make no more than $22,050.

High unemployment could drive the state’s child poverty rate to 27 percent this year, although federal and state lawmakers’ actions may mitigate the surge, said Eileen Garcia-Matthews, the group’s executive director.

"Texas children are disproportionately harmed during economic downturns like the one we’re experiencing now," she said.

On a day we are mourning one of the most unselfish public servants of our country, Senator Kennedy, we can see the stark contrast of self serving unabashedly unashamed heartless men like Rick Perry.

1. What a hateful, cynical, hypocritical man
:grr:

And there are a bunch of folk here in Texas like him.

And, I think, more who are not.

2. The article also states that the bill was vetoed at the author's
request?

Perry spokeswoman Allison Castle, though, responded, “The best long-term solution is providing an environment where students are educated in accountable public schools that graduate students who are college and career-ready and have jobs available to them.”

Perry, a Republican seeking re-election, has more work to do, she said.

"Texas is a growing state. With 1,000 people a day moving here, we are one of the largest economies in the world and there are challenges we must work to address," Castle said. She said Perry vetoed the college savings bill at the author’s request because of an “inadvertent drafting error.”

Don't mistake me for a fan of Rick Perry's. Sounds as though there might be more to the story, though.

3. Even if it was a drafting error
The agency that drafts bills is under Perry's control. He appoints the head of that legislative council and it has long been rumored that the person doing the job was very partisan. I wouldn't put it past Perry to have that agency deliberately draft a bill with the intention of killing it via a legislative procedure.

That's just the way he rolls.

4. Trying to find any compassion and care for their fellow citizens
in repubs is simply impossible. It just isn't there.
