Did Houston Homebuilder Bob Perry's Clout Trap Couple In Dream Home?

Bob and Jane Cull bought the home of their dreams in Texas. It was built by one of the most powerful and politically connected homebuilders in the country - and it was defective. Thus began a 13-year odyssey that would teach them some unhappy lessons about money, power and influence.

Back in the early 1990s, the Culls decided they wanted to build the home where they'd retire and live out the remainder of their days. Although they didn't play, they wanted a lot on a golf course in a new development in the suburbs of Dallas.

So Bob and Jane Cull bought from one of the state's largest homebuilders. And before they knew it, they were playing with their grandchildren in their new living room with a tall ceiling that looked out over hole No. 2. And they lived happily ever after. For about six weeks.

"There were windows that you could not raise," Bob says, and "a roof support in the attic that fell away."

Typical of Bob Perry! He has screwed more people in Texas than I can count on both hands many times over. On edit - request to my fellow DU peeps to REC this to the front page for more exposure about Perry.

1. every time I hear someone tell me they hate lawyers, I think of cases like this
and then I think, "imgaine if you had no legal options what would people do?"

I hope they win at the Supreme Court (US) level and that settles the entire issue.

3. This not Perry's first time at the US Supreme Court.
Looking for info on that now. Plus Roberts in the SC is closely tied with Perry. (not Rick Perry - our current and a-hole governor.

2. This is why in Dallas
you really need to have a foundation watering system. Also, you need to shy away from gutters everywhere but the inside corners so your foundation gets enough moisture. My house was built in the 40's and I've had a lot of these same problems. Peer and beam foundations are meant to give a little to compensate, but you can't avoid having cracks in the sheetrock that open and close each year. Part of the charm though. :)

4. The connection between Bob Perry's political people-screwing and his "private" customer-screwing
The connection between Bob Perry's political people-screwing and his "private" customer-screwing: he bought a legislature that created a legal system guaranteed to protect builders of substandard, badly constructed death traps - - - like Bob Perry.

6. I don't know why your post was moved...because it's applicable to all folks on DU..
who have parents or might be considering retiring to some place like this.

The NPR site took "going through Hoops" to navigate from the original to find your follow up post...but I thank you for posting it.

I just wish it was out there on DU Front Page.

Anyway...a HUGE KICK!

7. Blame Karl Rove
He figured out back in the early 90's that he could form an alliance with the corporate interests to get Republican judges elected in Texas on issues like "tort reform." The current totally corrupt situation of the Texas judiciary all goes back to Rove.
