Political activists look to capitalize on GOP win

WASHINGTON — Grass-roots political activists claiming ties with the conservative Tea Party movement are challenging 11 of Texas' 32 members of Congress this year in contests that will gauge the backlash against incumbents.

(snip)
The Tea Party candidates, all Republicans, are taking on six Republican House members in the March 2 primary. They also are seeking GOP congressional nominations to confront five incumbent Democrats in November in what experts deem long-shot races against lawmakers who repeatedly won re-election.

(snip)
Overall, half of Texas' 20 Republicans in Congress face GOP primary challengers this year — a modern record.

"Clearly these incumbents would rather not bother with challengers," says Cal Jillson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University. "It's a distraction that can siphon off emotional energy and resources."

:bounce: The enemy of my enemy, is my friend? Well at least until the primaries are over.

1. I have to add this one quote from the article above
We previously noted on another thread about Ralph Hall being too old, that he had an opponent also named Hall - Jerry Ray Hall. Jerry is a teabagger and so proud of it he's managed to put the word "Tea" on the ballot by his name so there will be no confusion. :eyes:

One of Hall's five GOP challengers, wealthy businessman Jerry Ray Hall, inserted "Tea" into his name on the ballot to underscore affinity for the cause.

"Campaigning hard," Hall alerted supporters via Twitter. "Am putting $350,000 into this race to stay ahead of the pack."

OMG, I wonder if this teabagger can win this year?

2. Fake PHD in Texas 4th District Race
GOP challenger Jerry Ray Hall has apparently claimed to have a PHD in psychology, referring to himself as Dr. Jerry hall, while living the past several years in Panama. Not only can no legitimate evidence be found to support this claim, but the candidate himself has refused (so far) to address the issue.
The guy appears to be a nut case. More here:

3. Not surprising
The whole tea party movement is made up of a bunch of liars and revisionist historians - starting with Glen Beck, Sarah Palin and Faux News. They lie like its their native language.

Jerry Ray can say he was influenced by his idols.

There are a couple of tea baggers taking on old Ralphie.

And Ralph, well Is Ralph Hall Too Old? Some of his constituents want to know ... seriously.

4. Quite Possible That Ralph Will Be Forced Out
I don't really believe that the so-called TEA Party movement has the strength of numbers to sweep all the Democrats and "liberal" (Bwhahahahahahah!) Republicans that their supporters say they do.

But it is going to have some effect. I suspect that the energized tea-baggers are going to score some victories in GOP primaries and knock out a lot of incumbent Republicans who aren't reactionary enough for the Tea-baggers' tastes. So I suspect that Turncoat Ralph will find himself to be one of the casualties in the GOP primary.

What worries me is that the TEA Party fervor will be strong enough in battleground districts to knock out some of the moderate Democrats here in Texas in the general elections. Say what you will about guys like Chet Edwards not being liberal enough, but at least they vote with more progressive Democrats at least part of the time. I'd hate to see Chet replaced with a Radical Right Hensarling/Sessions/Barton clone.

5. I hope Chet doesn't lose
He certainly has a good bit of money in the bank. I would not count him out. He's a fighter. And the fact that he is not liberal is what helps him keep his seat. The important thing is he represents his district, which is conservative.

I agree with you, he comes through on some tough votes.

Chet Edwards Reports Massive Cash on Hand Numbers

I dare you to count to 1,300,000.

Congressman Chet Edwards' bean counters are doing just that. Chet Edwards, known nationally as, the late notice Vice Presidential consideration, officially reported $1,309,661.02 cash-on-hand as of December 31, 2009 in a report the campaign will file with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) on January 31, 2010.
