Obama planning Austin trip

President Barack Obama plans to headline an Aug. 9 fundraiser in Austin for the Democratic National Committee, according to Democratic sources.

He is also planning to headline a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee event the same day in Houston.

According to an e-mail circulating among local Democrats, the event is tentatively scheduled for the Four Seasons, with tickets starting at $5,000 per person and ranging up to $30,400 per couple, which includes VIP seating and a photo with Obama.

Well I certainly hope some of that money raised comes back to Texas! Maybe we could line up to watch the motorcade go by and wave. :(

3. $5,000, huh? Well, that counts me out, LOL! I don't know of ANYONE...
that I would even try to pay that price to go and see, unless it's Jesus Christ. At least he's making an appearance in Texas.

6. Posted at BOR
Do we have a US Senate race in Texas this year? No. So this fundraiser is for Senate candidates elsewhere.

No offense to President Obama -- or Harry Reid or Barbara Boxer of Russ Feingold or even Alvin Greene -- but I would really appreciate it if nobody attended the DSCC fundraiser nor contributed money to the DSCC in this cycle, since we have important races right here in Texas which need financial assistance.

Charles Kuffner has the evidence that suggests we can win a few statewide races with some help from those who would be able to give $5000 to a Senate race elsewhere in the country (or for that matter the overhead expenses of the DSCC).

A personal aside to those who fit this description: you may not get the same influence you seek by contributing to a statewide candidate -- or a Texas House candidate -- instead of some unidentified out-of-state US Senator, but you will get something better: the satisfaction of knowing your contribution has the likelihood of making a much bigger difference in the lives of fellow Texans, particularly ones less fortunate than you.

Please consider this request sincerely and carefully.

10. So, DSCC money can only be used for Senatorial races...
and not gubernatorial races???

12. Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee

DSCC means it's a Senate fundraising committee.

But the fundraiser is also for the DNC which can give money to the state party or to Bill White directly.

20. Duh! Sorry, but I get abbreviations mixed up.
I agree with others that say our Texas money should be given to the candidates. You know, out of all the red states in the country (some that are worse than Texas when it comes to ideology), why does Texas always get disrespected more???

Have y'all ever wondered that? And if you have the answer, please tell me.

8. Thanks for the list
and the good points to consider.

I've never given to the DSCC before, only to the candidates themselves. I feel like my small amount makes a little more impact that way.

9. Thanks for the info, but I don't understand what the following is stating...
"A personal aside to those who fit this description: you may not get the same influence you seek by contributing to a statewide candidate -- or a Texas House candidate -- instead of some unidentified out-of-state US Senator, but you will get something better: the satisfaction of knowing your contribution has the likelihood of making a much bigger difference in the lives of fellow Texans, particularly ones less fortunate than you".

14. It's an appeal directly to
anybody reading DU who has the ability to write a $5000 check to attend a fundraising dinner with Obama whose proceeds go to the DSCC.

In effect: please don't. But whether one does or doesn't, please also do the same for some of the people who are actually on the ballot this cycle.

That giant sucking sound is dollars shooting out of Texas to be spent on campaigns anywhere but here. Time to tell the national apparatchiks that Texas is not NOT their ATM.

17. I would refuse to give ANY money to the DSCC, considering they never support our candidates here
Rick Noriega could have used some of those funds running against Cornyn, yet he didn't get ANY support from the DSCC.

I don't like the fact that the DSCC has millions of dollars to spend for incumbents, which already have a decent war-chest to play with, yet the candidates who could really benefit from a little funding don't any support.

I still blame the DSCC for helping Cornyn retain his seat. Rick could have used some extra money to buy ad time. Cornyn was buying ad time non-stop, it was disgusting.

Rick was an excellent candidate to run against Cornyn, and should have had more support from the DSCC, but lo and behold no help from the National Democratic Party, or the DSCC. None Nada, Zilch. Even Bill & Hillary said the DSCC should help Rick with some funding but again they chose not to do so.

So, screw the DSCC. They should find another state to fund raise in, Texas needs to spend its money on OUR candidates, because no one outside of Texas are willing to help us defeat the Republicons and turn our state back to BLUE.

:hi:

19. An inconvenient truth
Texas money that goes to the DSCC NEVER comes back.

But if someone with five grand in disposable cash wants to have dinner and pose for a picture with the President ... hey. it's their money. I would just ask them to think about also trickling some down to the people who make a difference this cycle. (Not many of these people read DU, or might be completely open to this suggestion from the likes of me, I fully understand.)

11. "Perry pounding White on Obama visit"
http://blogs.chron.com/texaspolitics/archives/2010/07/perry_pounding.html

Gov. Rick Perry's camp is working overtime to tie President Obama to Democratic challenger Bill White -- who has said he doesn't plan to attend Obama's Texas events next month.

The latest: Perry brought up an ad that raised eyebrows in 2009 featuring Obama, Martin Luther King Junior and White.

His campaign press release:

"Liberal Bill White was so eager to be pictured next to President Obama in 2009 that he bought advertising in a Houston newspaper featuring his image next to Obama's under the words "Hope" and "Change." Yet on Tuesday, Bill White dismissed President Obama's support as a "celebrity endorsement."

White had told the AP, "I'm not keen on Perry's politics of star endorsements, like when he has Palin put her seal of approval on it."

Katy Bacon said, "I think the point Bill was making is about Perry's approach of bringing people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh when he's talking about celebrities. Perry's always looking to enhance his national profile for the purposes of his political career."

Perry has said he's focused on Texas.

I think goodhair got the pounding!
