The Dallas Morning News endorses BILL WHITE!
Editorial: We recommend White for governor

11:01 AM CDT on Saturday, October 16, 2010

Rick Perry's campaign suggests that his cowboy swagger and his disdain for Washington, D.C. should be enough to convince voters that he's the leader Texas needs.
Elections 2010

The state's longest-serving governor is so certain his tenure should be extended that Perry has glided through this re-election bid with an impervious air, shrugging off tough questions and offering few specifics. Trust me, Perry tells voters, I know what I'm doing.

But in fact, Perry, 60, has done relatively little during a decade at the helm of state government. He can lay claim to few signature achievements. He lacks allies in the Legislature, and whether the issue is school finance, transportation or juvenile justice, he has not managed to see needed reforms through to conclusion.

The Republican governor is counting on the state's relatively strong economy to secure his third full term in office. But Texas' business-friendly environment predates Perry and will extend beyond his time in office. And now, with a deficit of up to $21 billion looming, more than budget bravado and a "taxes bad" mantra will be required to keep Texas on solid financial footing...

5. Blockwalking
In my red, red county and I can't believe the people who say they are going to reluctantly vote for Perry. When I see that there's no way I can change their minds (and I believe I've changed quite a few), I say, "You know, if you can't vote for Bill, please vote for someone other than Perry. Vote the Libertarian, but criminee, don't vote for Perry because he just doesn't care about Texas or Texans anymore. I don't know what happened to him, but he has tried very hard to sell the soul of Texas. If I weren't voting for Bill, I would vote Libertarian, and I have just never done that."

The reaction I'm getting is that people say they will consider it, and you can see their body language that they mean it. They go from a firm "I'm voting for Perry" to considering the fact that they really don't like Slicky and maybe they have some other choice.

Works for me if I can't get a Bill commitment.

If so, that's the best news I've heard. He was a Teabagger before Teabagging was popular. So to speak.

11. This is a good endorsement...
I could tell the DMN was leaning in the direction of endorsing Bill WHite because there was an article posted almost everyday about Perry's shenanigans. Unfortunately, we'll have to hear even more anti-White ads from Slick Rick. He's really going to up the ante, now.

12. La Empty endorsed Bill White
:wow:

I honestly thought they were going to copy the whackos in Waco & endorse Perry anyway, but nooooo, Bill White got the nod.

They also included a slam about the incumbent not meeting with editorial boards. I hope that decision really bites Good Hair in the ass.

But, as usual, the rest of the statewide races gave the Rs the nod. :eyes:

13. Well some sanity
It certainly took the major newspapers long enough to get their heads out of their butts on Perry. My feeling is what finally drove them over the edge is Perry's refusal to meet with editors. Newspapers really don't like not being "respected" by politicians.

14. I still can't believe he did that
you never make people feel as though you don't need their vote (think: Massachusetts & why we lost Ted's seat. He *ALWAYS* campaigned, block walked, etc, but this new idiot thought she could coast in because she was a Democrat).

The election is essentially a job interview & who wants to hire someone who refused to come in & talk to you?

The folks in Waco really must have their heads up their butts if they can't tell when someone's pissing on them & telling them it's raining.

What can we say about the Waco paper - they must be wacko. I just hope the people in Waco aren't as nuts as their newspaper editorial crew who obviously love abuse.

17. Endorsements for White

White earns governor's nod (Oct. 17)

It's instructive that White has collected support in the Panhandle from key Republican movers and shakers. Imagine that. This solidly Republican region of a solidly Republican state has several key leaders expressing their support for the Democratic nominee for governor.

But the former Houston mayor is no squishy liberal who is anathema to Panhandle conservatives. He is a pragmatic, pro-business bridge-builder with a demonstrated ability to work with Republicans.

Texas is facing some rough going as the next Legislature convenes in January. It has a multibillion-dollar deficit to erase and it needs a strong, hands-on administrator to help balance the books.

The state is primed now for a new

18. Amarillo!
:woohoo: That's a great one.

Unfortunately the Midland paper went for Perry - reluctantly?

Texas Tribune 10/18/10
Midland Paper "Reluctantly" Backs Perry

(snip)

The decision to endorse a candidate for governor shouldn't have been difficult for us here in West Texas.

However, there are two reasons why this decision has left us scratching our heads. The first is Bill White is not the same old Democrat. The second is Rick Perry.

The thrust of the Reporter-Telegram's argument is this: White is a good candidate who knows a lot about energy and isn't the Obama clone the Perry campaign is making him out to be, even if he should have released those tax returns, while Perry has refused to debate, is "thumbing his nose" at editorial boards by not appearing before them, meddles (their word) in higher education policy, has former staffers who are now lobbyists shaping policy, etc.

:wtf: No backbone in those Midland Editors?

23. Plainview Daily Herarld

Plainview Daily Herald 10/18/10
(snip)
Bill White, Democrat, for governor. He will bring a strong and diverse range of experience to the statehouse in Austin as governor. As a businessman, he has experienced and overcome the ups and downs of the private sector. As a former deputy secretary of the U.S. Energy Department, he has been at the helm of a large federal agency. And as mayor of Houston for six years, he performed marvelously and near flawlessly while under fire when he brought the state's largest city through the twin disasters of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita without the massive loss of life and crumbling municipal infrastructure experienced in New Orleans. White was a highly effectively and bipartisan leader of a diverse city, an experience that should serve him well in Austin. We like his no-nonsense style and campaign rhetoric free of hyper-partisanship and quick-fix promises. White has met with Texas newspaper editors and representatives on multiple occasions, and personally sought the Herald's endorsement during a post-primary visit to Plainview. On the other hand, his opponent, Gov. Rick Perry, has not met with nor asked for the support of any Texas newspaper. By arrogantly spurning Texas publishers and editors, he is turning his back on those who seek to bring fair and impartial information to all Texans and has demonstrated a tremendous disregard for newspaper readers and voters across the state. Gov. Perry doesn't appear to want our support, but Bill White has sought it and, we feel, richly deserves yours.

Another stunner! :wow:
