About Damn Time: Fort Worth Star Telegram Endorses BILL WHITE ;=} YIPPEE
Conservative Republicans are likely to maintain control of the Texas Legislature when it convenes in January. In general, their focus on low taxes, support for public education and the development of a regulatory environment conducive to attracting new business has served Texas well.

That's why it's puzzling when Republican Gov. Rick Perry bad-mouths cooperation with Washington in an effort to score political points, rather than informing his constituents about how important a good working relationship with the federal government is to the state's prosperity.

Texas is a state of international commerce. D/FW and Alliance airports are gateways to the world's productivity, and the Tower 55 railroad exchange in Fort Worth is the crossroads for international cargo shipped through the ports of Houston and Los Angeles.

The North Texas economy and Tarrant County in particular are closely linked to the defense industry, which depends on international sales to U.S. allies. That can't happen without the blessing of the federal government. It can't help the efforts of the state's congressional delegation in building consensus for those programs when their governor is grabbing headlines for his aversion to all things Washington.

But better late than never!

The hard economic reality of 2010 is that Texans deserve a governor who can work effectively on a national level.

Democrat Bill White, 56, is a seasoned public servant on the municipal and federal levels. And that experience shouldn't be viewed with the disdain that Perry continually heaps on it.
