Watergate journalist lambastes journalism and politics
During UT lecture, Carl Bernstein decries 'idiot culture.'
http://www.statesman.com/metrostate/content/auto/epaper/editions/friday/metro_state_1449e6bb246442540022.html
Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein says politics and the news media are no longer about the public good but only about partisanship and the bottom line.

(snip)
The Watergate story "was about the public good," Bernstein said.

In the early 1970s, the news media and Congress "were committed to finding out the truth, and they did," he said.

He said that is no longer the case, and it is unlikely that any similar abuse of power could be uncovered in the contemporary political and journalistic cultures.

Boy ain't that the truth. Today bu$h can get away with torture. The media just doesn't want to get to the bottom of it. All they care about is sex. If sex is not in the story then they don't give it very much coverage. Only sex sells.

Wish I had know about the lecture.

1. You should post this in articles and editorials
so that those living outside of Texas can read it. It's a very relevant read!

2. Quite right...................

our government is so partisan today that even with oustanding evidence of wrong doing, absolutely nothing would come of it. The Republicans would not vote to impeach Bush under any circimstances.
Since it would never get that far with a media that for all intents and purposes has been neutered, it's a moot pont.

3. Bernstein hates BushCo. He thinks it is the most radical presidency in
history. Of course, he is right.
