Prosecutors seek jail time for DeLay

UPDATED 10:20 AM: Travis County prosecutor Gary Cobb said the state will ask for jail time for Tom DeLay.

Cobb said he is not allowed under court rules to say specifically how much jail time prosecutors would recommend.

The sentencing hearing has recessed until 11 a.m. while the defense waits for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, to testify as a character witness.

The hearing is going faster than expected because the judge did not allow testimony from Orange businessman Peter Cloeren. Cloeren, who pleaded guilty to making illegal contributions to a congressional candidate in 1996, was expected to testify that he acted at the urging of DeLay.
(snip)

Prosecutors said DeLay has showed a “general lack of remorse” about his conviction.

I hope the judge takes into account the arrogant a-hole's lack of remorse! :grr:

#tomdelay 's lawyer says Tom did what he did because he believes in his principles

#tomdelay 's lawyer say no purpose will be served by sending him to prison. Says the whole thing is political. Says Tom has lost everything.

Really DeGuerin? DeLay has lost everything? What a bunch of crap! DeLay hasn't lost a damn thing other than his Congressional seat. And everything he did lose, he did of his own choosing - not like the bankers who are throwing people from their homes due to their corruption.

I'm not shedding one single tear for that asshole!

#you can hear a pin drop in the courtroom #tomdelay 's lawyer making strong (but false) argument.
#tomdelay 's lawyer last statement. "Mr DeLay has suffered enough"

No actually he hasn't' suffered enough DeGuerin. That's why the prosecutors are back in court today - to get justice.

I like what the prosecutors are saying:
HueyFischer
Prosecutor on #TomDelay:"He needs to go to prison. He needs to go today... 'No one is above the law' that quote is attributed to Tom Delay."

And this:
Crabbait Susan Bankston
State argues that Kino Flores just stole money - DeLay subverted the state Constitution.

14. Now he's blaming Nancy Pelosi
Susan Bankston
Invoking Nancy Pelosi's name - she said she would take me down. Spits out Pelosi's name.

I never intended to break the rules. They announced in 1995 that they were going to get me. I'm not stupid. I listen to lawyers.

Oh yes you are stupid and arrogant and no you didn't listen to your lawyer. I'm sure DeGuerrin advised you to plea bargain a deal on the sentencing and you obviously didn't do it. So now I hope you'll be reporting to jail today!!!

Crabbait Susan Bankston
#tomdelay now whining about Ronnie Earl. He's playing victim. Is anyone surprised?

Nope not one bit. DeLay is a coward after all, and it's never his fault. He was "the government" after all. Laws did not apply to him!

19. Brief detainment while he posts bond
Crabbait Susan Bankston
#tomdelay they took him into custody until he posts bond

It was our understanding yesterday that he had to receive a sentence of at least up to ten years to have to wait in custody for an appeal without bond. Since the sentence is less than 10 years he is free to slither on our earth a free man as long as he posts his bail.

:(
