I can hardly stomach watching this in person.
By the way if anyone wants to see the tea bag nuttiness from yesterdays tea bag rally to unseat the speaker Joe Strauss - the Austin American Statesman has some video.
It's linked to the First Reading blog story for today:
Frist Reading blog 1/11/11Caucus vote gives Republicans cover(snip)
House Republicans solidly lined up behind the speaker in a closed-door caucus vote on Monday. Opponents of Straus had hoped that a majority of caucus members would not support Straus, but that didn’t happen. And now, those who didn’t want to tell the angry primary voters back home that they were supporting Straus, but also didn’t want to oppose Straus, have a way out: They can say that they voted for the choice of the Republican Caucus, which is what so many grass-roots Republicans have been saying they wanted.
Ken Paxton, Straus’ primary challenger, said he will take his fight to the floor. I would guess that about 15-20 Republicans cast a vote against Straus today, either because they don’t want him as speaker or because they’re trying to protect themselves in the next GOP primary. (It could be both.)
Quite a scene Monday with the anti-Straus activists lining the halls and chanting at lawmakers as they walk by. Will that carry over to the House chamber today?
I bet you that if a group of Democrats lined the halls inside the capitol and chanted like the tea baggers did yesterday, the cops would have been called in to arrest everybody. But the Rs won't touch that!
