The current session of the Texas Legislature will address many issues, but none will be more closely watched than the effort to close a looming budget gap.

Explaining how exactly we got into the current budget hole is not easy. And with all due respect to Gov. Perry, yes it is very serious.

To understand how we got here, you must first look at the single thing that makes Texas both the most dynamic state in the Union and one the most powerful: population growth.

1. Ignore the costs of growth
Oh Perry loves to tout how Texas is creating more jobs than the rest of the country and that companies and people are moving to Texas, but he's totally mum on paying for the cost of increases in services including schools. He thinks that the local districts should pay for it period.

"The state is broke so lift your own damn schools your own dam selves, ya hear!"
