Castro Will Challenge Doggett in New District

Republican efforts to oust liberal Austin Congressman Lloyd Doggett are starting to bear fruit: The Texas Tribune is reporting that state Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, intends to run for the proposed new Congressional District 35, which would run from East Austin to San Antonio.

GOP map-drawers created Dist. 35 partly to comply with federal mandates for "minority opportunity districts" – ones in which minorities have an opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice – but also to get rid of Doggett, one of their mortal enemies. They redrew Doggett's Dist. 25 in a way that makes it impossible for him to win, taking away most of his East Austin base and matching him with the conservative Hill Country, running north almost to Fort Worth. Doggett said that although he believes the map is illegal, "I'm ready to live in a Winnebago if that's what it takes" should the map withstand the inevitable court scrutiny (and assuming Gov. Rick Perry signs it into law), and would move into the more winnable Dist. 35.

Oh this is heartbreaking. I like both of these men and I really hate to see this fight.

1. Castro To Take On Doggett for New Congressional Seat

Castro To Take On Doggett for New Congressional Seat

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, the nine-term, liberal Austin congressman, foiled Republicans’ efforts to redistrict him out of office in 2003 and intends to do it again in 2012, living “in a Winnebago, if that’s what it takes,” to vie for a newly-drawn district that encompasses San Antonio’s most Democratic and Hispanic neighborhoods and spreads up to southern Travis County.

The Republican Legislature drew him a bad map again this year, and getting through March’s Democratic primary could be a doozy. At a minimum, Doggett will face State Rep. Joaquin Castro, a 36-year-old rising star in his party who has politics in his DNA — his identical twin brother Julián is San Antonio’s mayor — and grew up in one of the San Antonio neighborhoods central to the new district.

“If you’re going by the numbers, I would say Castro is the heavy favorite,” said Harold Cook, a Democratic political consultant based in Austin. “But if there’s any Anglo candidate, any Austin candidate, who can win this race, it’s Doggett.”

4. I'm going to support Lloyd too
But Castro will be tough to beat in this district and he's actually a rising star in the future Texas Democratic Party so I know there will be a ton of Hispanic/Latino support for him.

This is just what the repukes want - divide and conquer and get rid of any remaining WD40s like LLoyd. :(

3. Lloyd was a state senator and a state supreme court justice
Before he was a congressman. Those are two of the most powerful positions in the state of Texas, and being a Congressman isn't all that (so they say), even for those who have been there for a generation. Those who aspire to something greater can usually and successfully seek it (that is, if they are Congressional Democrats anywhere but Texas. Read Bachmann, Michele and Paul, Ron).

I think maybe Doggett likes Washington better than Austin (politics). Wouldn't blame him for that, considering the dysfunctionality of our state government. But sometimes Beltway Syndrome is a dangerous affliction.

As much as I hate to lose him, he probably needs to pass the torch (and I know nothing of Castro's ideology). Losing in the primary would be an ignominious blow to his career at this point. I'd like to encourage Lloyd to run for US Senate, but that Republican stooge Sanchez is unlikely to get out of the way. Besides that, Doggett probably can't win the general election in the current Tea-steeped environment. Given that, I would say 'become a lobbyist for a couple of years and make a pile of money' and then run for governor or lite gov in 2014. But as I have already observed, apparently work in Austin isn't what he desires.

:/

5. If Lloyd had to retire
I would like for him to work nationally. Some left wing think tank or something like that.

6. San Antonio legislator Joaquin Castro says he's running against Lloyd Doggett
AAS 6/24/11

San Antonio legislator Joaquin Castro says he's running against Lloyd Doggett

State Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio said Friday he will run for the U.S. House next year, setting up a showdown with U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Austin in the Democratic primary.

Castro and Doggett both plan to move into and run in the newly drawn congressional District 35, which stretches from southeastern Travis County to San Antonio.

Castro, a lawyer, has been in the state House since 2003. He said he went to elementary school and middle school in the new district and "lived in the district for several years growing up."

(snip)

If the district stands, the race is likely to become a multimillion-dollar showdown between powerful names in Austin and San Antonio.

Doggett, 64, has represented Travis County in Congress since 1994, and he previously represented the county in the Texas Senate. He also had about $2.9 million in his campaign account at the end of March.

But Castro's name is well-known in San Antonio because of his service in the Legislature and because his twin brother is mayor.

8. He would still be running against a Latino
A Republatino army general who looked the other way while atrocities were committed at Abu Ghraib ... but a Latino still. Lloyd's in for the fight of his political life no matter what he chooses to run for.

9. I'm not even sure
if I'm in Doggett's district or not anymore. But I'd vote for him again, given the chance.

10. Why does Castro want to be US Rep?
Isn't he a fairly new State rep? Does he think he can't win his State seat...?

11. Not that new
This past session (79th regular was his fifth term)
Texas House Member- Joaquin Castro
...has served in the Texas Legislature for four terms and is currently serving his fifth

I suspect that like any politician he's looking to move up and he sees an opportunity. If he doesn't challenge Lloyd in this district that was drawn for a Latino to win, someone else will. So why not him?

13. He and his twin brother both
Both type A achievers. His brother is the Mayor of San Antonio - Julian Castro. He didn't win his first try but he won the following election.

They're both up and rising stars like I said.
