3. I'm sorry to see that Allen gave a better (beginning of an) answer
to the Hastert question. I didn't get to see the rest of the debate. Does anyone have comments about it?

5. Hastert's Situation will Stick to Allen and all R Candidates........
.....so it doesn't really matter how Mr.Webb answered that particular question-

It is shameful that R leadership allowed all those promising young people to be at risk for six years (latest information released puts the first harassing e-mails from Hastert in 2000). THAT speaks volumes about R leadership abilities ! Secretary Webb has stated that he believes in the principle of leadership accountability. Additionally, Mr. Webb is clear in his position statements that a strong constitution is very important to this country.

4. Webb Won The Debate
IMHO.

Macacaboy was on the defensive most of the time.

Webb is getting better as a speaker, but it was clear he won.

I think with the growing anti GOP, anti incumbant mood
in all of the country, Allen will loose in a tight race.

Just stuck another check in the mail for Webb

6. Gotta Keep Webb's Message Before the Public.......
....... that's going to be the issue. Will he be able to counter Allen's fabrications. Secretary Webb just needs to keep setting the record straight as many times as Allen tries to confuse people and pitch mud on the truth.

So-- it will be a money battle in many ways-- When's the next fund raiser? Oct 19 with President Clinton?

Can we auction something off on e-bay to raise money ?

7. I only got to see bits and pieces -
- not near enough to have a feeling as to who did better. Wonder if there will be a transcript available somewhere?

9. Heard from Some Virginians Today........
..... they thought Webb was REAL; he seemed like someone a bit studious, were some comments- which they wanted for someone as their Senator. But they said they could RELATE to Webb while A. seemed fake. Several people said, about Allen ".... he's always smiling- always. He just seems so false... too cultivated."

10. ETHICS ARE IMPORTANT, MR ALLEN........
OPEN LETTER TO SENATOR ALLEN

Dear Senator Allen:

While preparing dinner last night, I was really outraged to see your campaign ad on my local news station; the one which took Secretary Webb’s comments completely out of context. The ad’s effect was to present an opinion entirely opposite of that held by Mr. Webb, whose comments were made during a debate in Richmond Virginia earlier this month.

Mr. Webb is AGAINST higher taxes on the middle class and others in lower income brackets. He believes we can make up revenue gaps by closing tax loopholes for big business. Mr. Allen, your ad is a vicious approach to campaigning, which really does not help your campaign or the voting public. But you already know this.

To serve in the U.S. Senate, one qualification all voters should require of candidates is that they are a beacon of truth and honesty. Mr. Allen, the office of a Senator is, above all, one of public trust. The officeholder has a duty to the citizens who elected him; a duty requiring an ethical standard above reproach.

Actions on the campaign trail are a great indicator of what voters can expect of the candidate, should he be elected. So, I ask you, Mr. Allen, is your ad really the message you want to send?

Please withdraw your vicious ad, misrepresenting Secretary Webb’s stance on taxes. It reflects badly on your stature as a current U.S. Senator and sends entirely the wrong message about power and politics in Washington, especially given the backdrop of current Washington events.
