Virginia Animal Advocates: Anti-Tethering Bill to be Heard Tomorrow--Contact Your Delegate Today!

Virginia residents:

Chaining animals is inhumane and unsafe. Animals who are left tethered typically lack adequate veterinary care, food, water and shelter, and are rarely exercised or interact with their human families. Experts agree that chained dogs can become aggressive due to the intense
confinement and lack of socialization. HB 2098 could mean good news for animals in Virginia. If passed, the bill will prohibit the tethering of animals, except briefly in case of emergency, under the following conditions:

- the animal is less than 6 months
- the animal has not been spayed or neutered
- the tether weighs more than the animal's weight can easily bear
- the animal is without adequate space, shelter, or other care
- when temperatures are greater than 85 degrees or lower than 25 degrees
- in wet weather, unless a fully enclosed and ventilated dry shelter is available
- if space is inadequate to establish separate areas for eating or sleeping and defecation or urination

HB 2098 will be heard in committee on Thursday, January 25, at 7:00
A.M, so it is imperative that you contact members of the House
Agriculture sub-committee today and ask that they support this
important bill.
