Letter From Senator Mark Warner
in response to my letter to him on health care reform.

I know how this game is played. I used to date a Senate staffer
who sent out "reply" letters using an automatic typewriter
and a device called an "Autopen" which "signed" each letter to
make it look personalized

I understand this is a boilerplate response from
whichever aide helps answer emails and that my "concerns"
are simply a number on some tally sheet he may or may not even see.

Since he can't be bothered to actually address what the people want
I'll just go to the people directly. If you live in Virgina let
your Senators know how you feel (even if you're only reaching the staff).
Let him know you know who is paying for his vote.

Senator Mark Warner
Insurance: $212,800
Health Professionals: $333,151
Pharmaceuticals: $104,200
Hospitals/Nursing Homes: $91,025
Health Services/HMOs: $83,900

TOTAL: $825,076

Bold text for emphasis is mine

Dear Mr. _________

Thank you for your recent letter regarding reforming our nation's health care system. I share your concerns about the need for comprehensive health care reform, especially during this challenging economic time.

Although I do not support a government-run single-payer health care system, I believe we need comprehensive reform to achieve a competitive, cost-effective, and efficient system. This effort should be primarily focused on ensuring that all Americans can get adequate health coverage, and the coverage must be cost-effective and based upon data-driven medical standards. We must ensure that competition remains among health care providers because it is precisely that competition that drives innovation and cost reduction in the industry. Any final reform should also include measures to promote prevention and wellness, senior navigation through the health system, health information technology ("health IT") and telemedicine.

The health care reform debate in the Senate will intensify over the coming weeks, with the Finance Committee and Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions reviewing and amending legislation before the bill is debated by the full Senate. Although I do not sit on those Committees, I am actively engaged in drafting legislation to be included in the final package and in discussions with my fellow Senators on improvements we can make to the current bill. Much of the current controversy surrounding reform efforts has been focused on whether the bill should include a public health insurance option. As evidence that there is room to compromise, several alternatives are being discussed ranging from non-profit regional co-operatives to a delayed public option. I will keep your views in mind as we consider these and other proposals.

Thanks again for contacting me. As health care reform in the Senate takes shape, I value your opinions. I recently convened a task force on health IT, the product of a widely-attended conference at VCU, for the purpose of putting Virginia on the cutting edge of health IT. If you would like information about this initiative or my recently-introduced Senior Navigation and Planning Act, please visit my website at: www.warner.senate.gov . As we move forward, I will continue to seek out the advice and opinions of all Virginians in order to help shape an improved health care system that will be in all of our best interests.

Sincerely,
MARK R. WARNER
United States Senator

Hey Senator.... Thanks for the Republican talking points.

1. Wow...
I was just discussing this very topic, and Warner's position, with a friend yesterday. Seems our understanding of his position was fuzzy, at best. Thanks so much. On it.

2. I Received the Same Letter
I must have deleted it and appreciate your posting it, since I planned to write him again. Warner is a businessman from the get-go. But he must be convinced that health care is not a commodity. Free market doesn't work for everything. And there is a need to take profit out of this industry.

3. I Mentioned That
in my original letter

"I am just one of millions of Americans willing to pay higher taxes if it means an end to the current profit driven system. Health care is a human right, not a market commodity that excludes nearly 50 million citizens and drives thousands more into bankruptcy and despair."

I guess only his business buddies are important.

I plan to reply to his form letter.

4. We Have to Keep It Up
I don't think we can say it enough. Just curious, but do you have any information on how much our taxes will really rise if we were to get single payer through. I can't believe it will be as high as my current premiums, deductibles, out of pocket expenses, etc. It seems to me unless we can convince the millions who are selfish and only care about themselves that they will benefit financially, we will never get them to care about everyone, like you and I do.

5. Agreed
I'm working on a response to his form letter reply.
Hard to not get mad. I'll edit out the snark later.
I still haven't heard back from Senator Webb.

As for taxes: I would think less than 5%. My premium was
about 25% of my total monthly pay (I lost my job recently)

Educating the masses???
Not until we take back the media.

7. We Can Use Our Own Talking Points
Went to a forum on health care in Richmond this week. One of the speakers talked about each of us talking about single payer to one person every day. If we can do that, we can get it out there. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the media to come through. We're paying about 13% of our income for premiums. But we have such a high deductible that I rarely see a doctor. Hope I'm healthy!
