Virginia Democrats’ hopes of maintaining its hold on the Commonwealth’s upper house were very much in doubt late Tuesday, hinging on a razor-thin count in a single Senate district.
With the final precinct reporting, longtime Spotsylvania incumbent Sen. R. Edward Houck (D) fell 86 votes behind Republican challenger Bryce E. Reeves after leading in counts earlier in the evening. An unknown number of provisional ballots in the 17th district, encompassing Fredericksburg and parts of five downstate counties, are to be counted Wednesday. Absentee ballots have been counted.
