Tell me about Slade Gorton
I have read a few blurbs but don't know much about him... apparently animal rights groups didn't like him... Indian tribes didn't like him... he had the nickname of "Cyanide Slade" for some reason....

Can WA DUers tell me more about this guy? There isn't much on wikipedia.

1. Scumbag
Lobbyist whore for extractive industries. Probably no WA politician is more hated by Native American groups.

2. Toxic to the environment, industry crony
He is a transplant from New England, and is related to the company that makes frozen seafood (Gorton's). Also a major apologist for the theft of the 2000 election. I remember, too, that he voted against the stamp that donated profits to breast cancer.

3. He used to be one of that vanishing species,
the moderate Republican, back when he was state Attorney General. As soon as he got elected to the Senate, he started kowtowing to the extremist right-wing nutbags. He never was permitted to express another actual opinion or belief again. This is why I don't support even the most moderate Republican for any national office - the minute they're elected, the unrelenting pressure on them to conform begins, and eventually they're nothing but another cog in the Repuke machine.

5. Asshole
Here's a couple of old links. His stand on issues is worth examining. One of the political highlights of my life was when that poor excuse for a human being got voted out of office. Ugh.

11. He would have been a better Commissioner of Baseball than Senator...
Strangely enough, he seemed to have the instinct to fight the big money interests in the sport, while rolling over for them in all other matters.

8. i wrote to him about the 1996 telecom bill that was so important then
and he wrote back that he would vote any way he pleased and that I was an idiot who had no right to an opinion. (paraphrased, but not too different than he put it) He definitely said he would vote however he pleased. and he just said I was stupid to think the way I did.

which allowed the timber insdustry to remove any restriction on any land and open it for clearcutting.

But, im not going to get started because my blood pressure is high enough.

HA! edit to add: I see that I've already responded to this post.
