Hey WV DU'ers!
Edited on Thu Oct-25-07 12:07 AM by GrpCaptMandrake
How do you feel about "our" Senator Byrd voting today to comfirm a man (Leslie Southwick) to the Federal Appeals Court who wrote an opinion giving a man back his job who openly called a co-worker a "N****R;" who wrote an opinion upholding taking a daughter away from her mother and told the mother that her being a lesbian is a "lifestyle choice" and that "choices have consequences?"

Am I the only one who's sickened and disgusted by Senator Byrd's vote?

If you're disgusted, too, could you take the time to e-mail and tell him so?

All these years I've defended Byrd to Repigs who constantly bring up his Klan membership, and now he does THIS!

1. Byrd has always been inclined to confirm nominees.
He believes each administration should be able to pick their folks. I don't agree, at least to the degree Bobby takes this principle, but he does have a point.

One wonders how far that goes

If the nominee was a member of the American Nazi Party, would Byrd just say "What the hell!" and vote to confirm?

Byrd seems to have forgotten the "advise" part of "advise and consent."

On Edit: One "d" too many.

3. Yes, I've wondered that before.
I wasn't trying to justify the vote. Just wanted to share a perception about the way he thinks when voting like this.

Frankly, I'm more concerned about Jay than I am Byrd. Remember all that noise about getting the rest of the Phase 2 report out? Well you're never going to see it happen. In this I am fundamentally disappointed in Rockefeller.

4. You've opened the door
to the single most important discussion we should be having here in WV.

What happens to rank-and-file Democrats when the Democrats in Congress stop representing them.

I was at the JJ Dinner a couple of weeks back, and couldn't escape the feeling I was at the Saturday Nite Rasslin' match down t' th' Armrey

Like Dear Leader said: "This ain't my first rodeo," or, as I like to put it "I was born AT night, not LAST night."

Frankly, the Man-in-the-Moon and I have more in common than Jay or RCB or NJR or ACM or JM and I do.

The Second Coming of Christ wouldn't stop any of those people from advocating for blowing up a few thousand more acres of "the hills, the beautiful hills," as long as Massey keeps the war chests full. I have lost ALL faith in the party in this state.

I yearn for a progressive candidate in the primary who can assault the positions of these entrenched corporatists. Of course, as the saying goes, I can yearn in one hand and s**t in the other, and see which one fills up first.

Sorry to be so coarse.

In our state, we don't have a clue, or maybe don't WANT one.

5. Jay, Byrd, Manchin, Mollohan, and Rahall have one overriding virtue
They're not Arch Moore's daughter.

Manchin is a DINO and doesn't do much for us but Underwood was enthusiastic about selling us out to Blankenship and other corporate thugs. Rahall and Mollohan seem out of touch but at least they don't caucus with the national GOP, and we've seen how hard the Bush league lapdog Republican Congress worked to take everything they could from you and me so they could further enrich the wealthy elite.

I'm disillusioned too. I really thought it would be better than it is now when Democrats regained control of Congress. I'd like to see some progressives come along too. Democrats who would stand up for unions and our social programs. Candidates who would speak out against mountain top removal. But for now we are left with our choices between bad and worse.

6. Maybe that's our problem
waiting for "progressives to come along."

Could it be that maybe we, us, progressives are the ones we're waiting for?

Filing fees aren't that high. Maybe just by running and showing up to the bean dinners, we could move the debate more toward our side of the political spectrum.

I often think we need to stop thinking in terms of putting "real" progressives/liberals in the White House, and start thinking about putting them on city councils and county commissions.

Great edifices are best built from the base up, not from the top down.

B-T-W: I call Shelly "Arch in a cheap wig." Yep. That's her.

7. Maybe.
We sometimes say 'they' when we should say 'we'. But at this point in my life it would take a lot to get me to serve in any political office.

I call her Smelly Snore Stinkytoes, but I mix it up some.
