W.Va. voters to pick US Senate nominees
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - It's time for West Virginia voters to narrow the field of 14 candidates in the special primary for U.S. Senate.

Saturday's results will decide nominees for the seat held by the late Robert C. Byrd.

Gov. Joe Manchin is among the three Democrats running. John Raese and Mac Warner are the better-known of the 10 Republican hopefuls. Jesse Johnson is the sole Mountain Party candidate.

More than 30,500 ballots have already been cast during early voting. But state election officials expect a low turnout for a single-race Saturday election.

I haven't missed voting in a primary or general election for 40 years, so I guess I'll vote today just so I won't break a streak. Besides, I don't want stealth Republicans picking an Alvin Greene for us. People registered as independents can vote in West Virginia Democratic primaries, ya know.

1. I voted early a week ago...
for Ken Hechler. I know that he won't beat Joe Manchin, but I think he would be a much better senator.

And wouldn't it be a hoot to have 96 year old Hechler replace 93 year old Robert Byrd!

2. I like Ken.
But I voted for the DINO Manchin because I know he will win. Not disagreeing with you, I was tempted to vote for Hechler.

3. My mom, my sisters and I
had a discussion about the election. None of us are fond of Manchin, but we all realize that he is miles ahead of any of the Republican candidates, especially Raese. I think Mom voted for Hechler, but my more practical sister probably voted for Manchin. I'm so lucky -- there's not a wacko right-winger in the bunch!

5. Manchin, Raese to face off for Senate
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Claiming easy wins in their parties' special primary elections Saturday, Gov. Joe Manchin will face Morgantown businessman John Raese in a Nov. 2 special election to fill the remainder of the late U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd's term in the Senate.

With 85 percent of precincts reporting, Manchin easily outpaced former secretary of state Ken Hechler and two-term delegate Sheirl Fletcher with 73 percent of the votes cast, at 55,882 votes. Hechler had 13 percent of the vote, at 13,021, with Fletcher at 10 percent, with 7,756 votes.

Raese, the best-known candidate among a field of 10 Republicans, also breezed with 71 percent of the vote in that primary, at 33,585. Morgantown real estate executive Mac Warner had 16 percent, with 7,387 votes.

<snip>

Manchin pledged to run an upbeat and positive campaign, and said he is hopeful that Raese - who has been known to employ an acid tongue in past elections - will do the same.

FWIW, back home, I would have voted for Hechler rather than a Rino-lite.

Edited to add:
Thanks for the link.

7. I voted for Hechler

I think Manchin is way better than Raese. I also think he would be more of a democrat than like Leiberman or Nelson, but I really wish we had another sort of younger really intelligent more progressive pick.

One of my main objections to the majority of WV politicians is if you go to the legislature, or talk to any of them, they are coaches, or the guy who owned the pizza joint, or the local good old boy and while everybody knows them and maybe likes them, they are not really super sharp. Only a few maybe 25% of our politicians are really smart.

8. Which ones?
Pizza joint owner? Are you talking about Craigo? Who's a coach?

WV has a citizent legislature as opposed to a professional legislature.
