State Senator Lena Taylor Named First Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin
MADISON – State Senator Lena Taylor has been named the new 1st Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, State Chair Joe Wineke announced today.
“We’re very excited to bring Lena Taylor on board the leadership team of the Democratic Party,” Wineke said. “Lena has been a passionate voice for working families on the Joint Finance Committee, and has been a leader in the fight to create jobs, provide affordable health care, and improve our public schools. Lena has been a rising star, and I know she will bring excitement, energy, and dedication to the job.”
Taylor will serve in the position until next year’s Democratic State Convention in La Crosse, when a special election will be held to fill the position for the remainder of the term. She replaces Linda Honold, who resigned her leadership post last month to take a consulting opportunity.
Taylor was elected in November 2004 to fill the 4th District State Senate seat vacated by Gwen Moore’s election to Congress. Previously, Taylor won an April 2003 special election to the State Assembly. She is currently a member of the Joint Finance Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee, and is the Chair of the Legislative Black and Hispanic Caucus.
Prior to her election to the Legislature, Taylor worked as a Public Defender representing indigent citizens in need of legal services. In 1996, she opened Taylor and Associates Law Office on the north side of Milwaukee. She now provides free legal clinics and referrals through Taylor & Associates. A life-long resident of Milwaukee, Taylor is a graduate of Rufus King High School and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and has a law degree from Southern Illinois University.
