Hey DU'ers, this is Bill, Jef's former 1st vice chair at the county party and currently working on a US Senate race in Minnesota for 2006 - www.fordbell.com (you'll love Ford! Doesn't simply react to the Republican agenda and talking points, but sets out Democratic goals and has challeged the field to pledge that single-payer, univeral health care would be their first act as a US Senator).
Anyway...
Jef probably won't run this time and wouldn't have last time if someone more qualified had stepped up to do it. But getting on the ticket, as electoral wisdom shows, would mean a few more votes for John Kerry (or against George W. Bush, depending on your views) so Jef dived in.
And yes, it meant that Petri spent some of that huge war chest. In fact, during his campaign he once informed me that Petri had spent over $800,000 at that point. We high-fived and said in unison, "Mission Accomplished". That was 800k that didn't go against John Kerry, Russ Feingold, Tammy Baldwin, Ron Kind or Dave Obey. Jef got walloped, out performing Dottie by a few tenths of percentage points, but he tied up some money, spread the Democratic gospel, energized the local party and ran one hell of one-man non-campaign campaign against a moderate Republican (Did you know, that Petri voted for the $85 million before voting against it? Whenever some Freeper from the 6th said that was why they were voting against Kerry, I would respond, "so you'll be voting for Jef Hall, because Petri..."). He even got Petri to debate and say that the charges against Delay were like a "parking ticket".
Jef is trying to vet some candidates, but he'll gladly take suggestions. And not only for the 6th! We need people (like DU activists) to run for local and state assembly races! Contact him through his web site - www.jefhall.com
