Most effective way for me to spend last days before election?
I need some advice on how to maximize my impact on the election. I live near Cumberland, but I want to go to a more populated area a few days before the election.

I am disabled with Central Pain Syndrome and a seizure disorder, but I can drive and sit and hold a sign. I can't talk for very long.

I think I can be most effective picking off Nader voters in Madison. I plan to use the issue of medical marijuana. I just moved to WI from WA where I was legally authorized to use medical mj so I've got a huge stake in the issue.

I would like set up some signs and hand out pamphlets on the UW campus, and hit any Nader rallies. My signs will say things like "A Vote for Nader is a Vote to Send me to Jail" and I'll have a simple pamphlet outlining Bush's war on med mj patients and Kerry's support.

Does this make sense? If so, would anyone care to assist me?

Any other ideas?

1. YOU ROCK!
This is a great idea. And just spend as much time as you can visualizing success for our team. Hey, we need all the positive prayer and vibes we can get, right? Go for it. You can also write letters to editors of local papers, do any online polls, and just get your voice out on forums. Also, remember to take care of yourself first and foremost, because if the Bushies steal this election, we are going to need every body on the frontlines hitting the streets.

2. It's wonderful you're doing this! All I can add is that
to my mind, the best way to get people to vote is to convinve them it is of the utmost necessity they do so.

This means getting out information to them that shows clearly how dire the situation is. I would look up flyers/info sheets here on DU and elsewhere and print and distribute as many as you can, leaving them where you can.

And as we all know there are plenty of dire subjects affecting people's lives. In addition to yours, a few that come to my mind would be flyers on the Supreme Court, poverty, women's reproductive rights, health care, civil liberties.

Best of luck to you and thanks for all you're doing!

3. I am sorry I can't be there, physically, to pass out pamphlets.
Your ideas, and your plans, are GREAT. STELLAR. Probably will be VERY poignantly effective, too.

In the reporter biz, we were always encouraged to make the story personal, focus the larger issue on one individual's personal predicament. Why? Because it brings life, blood, bones, skin, and breath to that issue - literally fleshes it out so others can relate to it more personally. We were always encouraged to "put a face on it." If it's a disembodied cause, it will remain calcified like that, chained to the ground, rather than allowed to soar. Looks like you are embodying this.

Sad to say, your "A Vote for Nader is a Vote to Send Me to Jail" campaign is based on some very scary truth. If bush stays in office, SO much potentially wonderful discoveries and gains will be condemned to oblivion. Bless your heart!!!

Perhaps you should write to Michael Moore? I think you can start fairly simply, through his website. After all, I'm pretty sure his next film project is on the health care crisis in this country. I believe I read somewhere that its tentative title is "Sicko." Your slice of that overall pie sure merits more attention. Or would that be MOORE attention?

HUGS to you. You're doing God's work. There are LOTS of people who will be helped because you gave a damn and stuck your neck out like this. My dad would have appreciated it. He used marijuana to ease his own pain and suffering toward the end of his life - the last couple of years or so when late-onset diabetes was taking him down, hard. It was awful to watch. Really made us feel helpless. Even some of the moralizers around us didn't dare touch his pot-smoking, thank heavens. They woulda heard from me if they had.

4. Thanks for your comments and encouragement
I'm going to try to implement my plan. I'll post messages here about my experience.

I think I can do this myself. I'll get friends here to help make signs and pamphlets. THen I just need to find a hotel within walking distance of the campus and camp there.

I was a member of the Green Cross patient co-op in Seattle. I know a lot of people with AIDs, MS, cancer, glaucoma, epilepsy who've been helped. For me it reduces pain and allows me to talk longer.

It's only one reason I support Kerry, but it's an important one. I think my plight may resonate with potential Nader voters.

Thanks again.
