A group organizing a health care "town hall" meeting featuring ABC journalist and commentator John Stossel has ties to previous allegations of illegal campaign practices and has left questions unanswered about its current activities.



Americans for Prosperity, a group that pushes for tax cuts and less government spending, is planning an event Thursday at the Rothschild Pavilion that spokesman Bob Delaporte said will help people "get the facts about health care."

Whatever the coming discussion, the conservative group's state director Mark Block has faced accusations of illegal campaign practices.

Dane County Circuit Court records show Block paid a $15,000 fine following a complaint in 2000. Reid Magney, spokesman for the state's Government Accountability Board, said Block was accused of illegally coordinating efforts between the campaign of then State Supreme CourtJustice Jon Wilcox and an independent group disbursing political material.

Dear Friends of Healthcare Reform,

For those of you who are upset by the misinformation about health care reform that is being spread around.

On August 27 6:30-8:00 pm at the Rothschild Pavilion John Stossel of ABC will host a town hall sponsored by Americans for Prosperity. This meeting will be anti-reform thus it is important that our voices be heard.

Some of you may have gotten tickets to attend to hear what they have to say. The rest of us will be standing outside the meeting with signs showing our support for health care reform. We will meet in front of St Theresa’s Church near the pavilion at 6pm. The more people we have the better our statement will be. We will be making some extra signs that you can carry, or just stand with us. Please join us. Now is the time to act.
