Belling apologizes, in his own way, for use of term

Talk show host made reference to 'wetback' voters

Complaining last week about illegal immigrants voting in the presidential election, WISN-AM (1130) talk radio host Mark Belling described them as "wetbacks," an offensive term for illegal Mexican immigrants.

Belling apologized on the air Monday, admitting the term was "derogatory." But he couched his apology in sarcasm and bluster, later polling listeners on whether he should have apologized and saying he "should have used a different mean term."

WISN program director Jerry Bott said Monday, "Mark apologized for his original comment, and we stand by him in that and support him in that."

Trusting hosts' judgment

In describing the guidelines for the language that WISN on-air personalities can use, Bott said, "We trust our hosts to be professional, to use good judgment and discretion, and to always protect our license to broadcast."

... judging from this morning's Journal-Sentinel, which said he's lost a couple of sponsors. Unfortunately, I think the worst that will happen is he might be forced to give an unqualified (this time) apology and possibly suffer a short suspension by Clear Channel to take the heat off. I don't for a minute think CC will fire him. He'll come back, and nothing will change, including his ratings, because his audience doesn't care and isn't minority. Sick sick sick. I long ago focused my AM radio on WGN, Chicago, which has managed to make a lot of money and attract a huge audience without a single obnoxious personality on its payroll... and you'll learn more listening to Extension 720 (weeknights at 9PM) for a couple of hours than Belling, Sykes, and Wagner for a month.
