Now Rethugs out to destroy WiscNet
More bounty for their Koch overlords:

The University of Wisconsin System would be forced to return about $37 million in federal funds intended to extend broadband Internet across Wisconsin, under a provision passed by the Legislature's budget committee Friday.

The legislation would also prohibit UW System campuses from supporting WiscNet, a cooperative that brings high-speed Internet to most schools and libraries across the state. Campus leaders say they fear the change could cripple the network. (more at link)

I made these designs and am donating 25% of any commission to the Wisconsin Democratic Party:

1. This is extremely short sighted
And penny wise pound foolish. The investment in higher bandwidth is actually a form of business development. Besides the educational opportunities, the additional fiber will be accessible to the surround area, epically in rural parts of the state. I guess the profit margins are not high enough for some Walker election contributor so out this program goes.

3. ALSO - the Instructional Commmunications services would be eliminated - teleconferencing,
videoconferencing etc. - our office relies on this service heavily (as do many many other govt and non profit entities). The service is exceptionally excellent and it's economical. All being turned over to AT&T no doubt. Do we see a pattern here? Sell off the public assets (cheap) and then give away the $$$ in tax cuts to your wealthy cronies. Not so long ago this would be recognised as pillaging and criminal malfeasance.

5. information flowing freely

We just can't have that!

As we all know TRUTH IS A LIBERAL PLOT

We can't have TRUTH being circulated freely or it will screw up Republican talking points..

6. the stuff about protecting small rural telcos is just crap
if you have the misfortune to be is some of those areas you are just screwed.

You want job development?
not in these areas folks

I sell services.
I run into circustances where a company is moving to a new location only to find their internet options are pretty much and expensive t-1 line or dial up.
and i do mean expensive.

It does amaze me that companies will look into everything except what kind of a bozo the local telco is. People may hate att, but at least in that foot print you have the possiblility of other options. By options i mean a competeitive environment.
