Toronto — Canada's next Ambassador to the United States will be will be former Mulroney era finance minister Michael Wilson, The Globe and Mail has learned.
Mr. Wilson, is expected to be appointed towards the end of this week or early next week, pending the agreement of the U.S. government, something that is normally a formality.
The appointment of Mr. Wilson is the latest example of the Mulroney influence on the new government of Stephen Harper. Mr. Harper's chief of transition is Derek Burney, a former chief of staff to Mr. Mulroney, who was also rumoured to be in line for the job.
Other members of Mr. Mulroney's circle close to Mr. Harper include Sen. Hugh Segal and Sen. Marjory LeBreton, both of whom have acted as advisers to the Prime Minister.
