Canada won't opt out of Kyoto: Minister

SAINT JOHN — The Canadian government will not opt out of the Kyoto accord, but the federal environment minister says the country must do more than just try to reach targets.

Rona Ambrose says she has a problem with elements of the Kyoto agreement that allow the purchase of carbon emission credits to help meet targets, but do nothing to benefit the environment or promote Canadian clean air and clean water technology.

She says a made-in-Canada solution is needed that will see real action taken within the country.

Ambrose says Kyoto is only one of 59 international agreements that Canada is a signatory to, and there may be other ways to achieve pollution reduction goals.
