TORONTO — Conrad Black stepped up his campaign to regain Canadian citizenship yesterday with a speech in Toronto laden with praise for the country he was forced to renounce when he joined the British House of Lords.
In his most significant public appearance since being charged in the United States last December with racketeering, tax evasion and fraud, the 62-year-old former newspaper magnate told business leaders that Canada is poised to play a larger role in the world.
He followed those comments with support for Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
“We must not let it go to our heads, but Canada is by many measurements and by imminent potential, one of the world's great powers and I think we should get used to it,” Lord Black told the Empire Club of Canada.
