RCMP beef up security as threats against minister escalate

DANIEL LEBLANC

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

April 23, 2008 at 7:17 PM EDT

OTTAWA — The RCMP have beefed up security around Immigration Minister Diane Finley in response to threats from criminal groups that oppose her efforts to block foreign strippers from entering Canada, federal officials said yesterday.

The officials said the increased security has been visible in recent weeks, but refused to comment on the exact nature of the threats or the additional protection afforded to Ms. Finley.

However, officials said the extra security flows directly from Bill C-17, which would limit the number of work visas given to foreign strippers.

“It's because of threats made by undesirables who are not in favour of our … efforts to prevent vulnerable people, such as strippers, from being exploited or abused,” a federal official said yesterday.

I think this is sad story, but the knowledge revealed later in the article that apparently past gov'ts have been lobbied by organized crime forces. That's more than a little scary, since it was apparently successful.
