We may not be all that happy, but my hunch is, neither is Harper, nor his MPs.

1. 3 years of governing
and Harper still hasn't gotten anywhere.

No I imagine his MPs are NOT happy.

Especially after all that duct tape.

2. This was the lowest voter turnout of all elections
heard a CBC reporter say. $300 million for an extension of the same with a pinch of voter disenfranchisement for a little zing.

4. I don't think it's a matter of laziness
the election took a back seat to other concerns, personality played a part and the center leftwards is fragmented.

but I'd accept proportional representation.

7. It's the only system we have.
The one we've had for a century, and the one we're likely to have for the next century.

We aren't going to have PR, so learn to use the one we have.

16. do tell us

How many hearts and minds ... or mere ballots ... did you win for the great and good Liberal Party with this line of patter this time around?

Is there a membership review committee that some party-minded Liberal might want to show your collection of posts here to? Apparently there's no aptitude test required in order to take out one of those party cards ...

19. Are you just on here
to try and get rises out of people with your snide condescending comments that contribute nothing? I haven't read enough of your threads to determine what your political party leanings are, but whatever it is, it may be best for you going forward to drop the bullshit. Not winning friends here.

17. Golly gee
that makes sense. Why bother trying to change things for the better? No way! Just go along with the way things have been by gum.

Things change all the time. Sometimes, BIG things. Other countries with far longer histories than Canada have changed.

Learning to use the one we have amounts to most people being cut out of the process of democracy, and not being represented in their own government. No thanks. I think everyone deserves representation, and should be able to have it no matter what part of the country they live in or who they vote for, right or left.

No, I don't think Harper is happy either. He would only be happy with a majority. I wonder how long Dion will last?

12. He'll be gone before year's end.
Dion I mean.

I wonder though, if Harper's control of his MP's every word will still be as solid, now that they see it didn't get them anywhere.

13. Agreed - It wasn't all good for Harper
1 - Cracks forming in his Alberta base (Edmonton Strathcona (went ND) and Edmonton Sherwood Park (nearly went Independent)). As Harper well knows, the sense of being taken for granted led Albertans to form and support the Reform Party in Mulroney days. This ought to be very troublesome to him.

2 - No Quebec breakthrough. This only exacerbates the issue above, as westerners will begin to resent the attention paid to Quebec, given that they didn't reciprocate.

3 - Gains in Ontario, but Ontario is fairly changeable in its voting, so those can't be considered safe.

4 - Now he has to govern in difficult times - probably a deficit. That's a lot harder than handing out tax breaks from the previous government's surplus.

In some ways I am glad he will have to "wear" this recession. I think people decided he should have the opportunity to show what an conservative economist can do to stave off a recession, especially in Ontario. If he doesn't perform, he will be punished severely.

14. 1) The margins
Edited on Wed Oct-15-08 10:56 PM by Rainforestgoddess
of victory are so narrow for a lot of ridings that went conservative. Saanich Gulf islands went con by less than 5%, and the NDP candidate got 5% of the vote after he had already dropped out of the race! (but he was still on the ballot) Not that it would have given the riding 100% to the grits but it shows how close the races were. In my own riding the Grit incumbant got in by 68 votes. Talk about close! My husband voted green and I told him that if the liberal guy had been edged out by one vote, it would have been HIS fault! :)

2) there will ALWAYS be western resentment towards Quebec. Quebec is seen as a spoiled whiney child who gets all of Daddy's attention by so many people here, particularly of my parent's age.

3) I agree - the wind blows Ontario back and forth btw liberal and conservative

4) Hopefully he will be so busy dealing with economic problems he won't be able to f' with our social system.

21. No, I'm sure they aren't happy at all
the best he could do was a few more seats but another minority against the weakest liberal leader ever. Thats equivalent to a resounding defeat as far as he's concerned.
