NDP to prop up Tories to pass EI changes

The NDP says it plans to prop up the Conservatives in order to pass a Tory plan to extend employment insurance for long-tenured workers — a move that appears to rule out a fall election.

New Democrat MP Thomas Mulcair told reporters that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has "shown movement" with the new EI plan — which translates to nearly $1 billion for 190,000 workers — and is a step in the right direction for what they've been asking for.

"So we’re not going to do anything to block that money. And an election campaign would definitely block it," Mulcair said. "That money wouldn’t flow to those families who need it and that's not something we're going to do."

Gotta love the "Prime Minister Harper has "shown movement" with the new EI plan" bit, translation we will play kissy-ass with Harper even though he is only offering crumbs. Pathetic but not at all surprising.

Harper is now tainted with "coalition politics", even though the media will spin it otherwise. Layton is having to back Harper, which is bound to affect his soft "Liberal to NDP" support. Ignatieff gets to look strong, as far as calling for an election goes. It's probably a wash for the Bloc.

But it will take a month or two for the public to form a judgment about it all, should this arrangement last. The corporate media will be spinning like crazy, though I think their credibility is eroding more and more anyway.

Liberals", it will be interesting to see him protest he didn't want their support, lol. Layton and the NDP will be somewhat silenced in any criticism of Harper from now on if they DO prop CRAP up, imo, because the finger can be pointed to say 'well, you people propped them up'.

I agree re the Bloc, they really aren't that relevant in this as far as any backlash is concerned.

I just hope the Liberals stay on the attack regardless of any propping by the NDP and the Bloc.
