Three rights-agency managers sacked
Three managers of the unsettled arms-length agency Rights and Democracy have been fired in a continuing internal war between staffers and board members.

The three, the agency's department heads under late president Rémy Beauregard, had been suspended since January because board members suspected them of leading a movement calling for three members of the board to resign. They were fired by letter March 1.

A public battle between staffers and members of the board burst into public view Jan. 7, when Mr. Beauregard died of an apparent heart attack after a tense board meeting.

Staff members signed a letter demanding that three board members, including chair Aurel Braun, resign their positions.

INT RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY FIRINGS Duration: 00:07:31

From bad to worse...to worse still.

Today, three senior members of the Canadian agency Rights and Democracy were fired. The official reason was that they had led a staff rebellion against a new board of directors.

Rights and Democracy was established by the federal government in 1988 as an arm's-length organization to protect and promote democracy abroad. But in recent months, the organization has been riven by tensions, arising from claims that the Harper government has stacked the board with members aligned to the government's foreign policy objectives.

Payam Akhavan resigned from the board of Rights and Democracy in January, to protest against the Harper government's new appointments to the organization. He is a professor of international law at McGill University, and we reached him in Montreal.

Seems to me that the Harper government is at least guilty of manslaughter. This needs another uproar like the closing of parliament!

1. This is SUCH a mess!
Again the Cons have taken a totally unknown committee and minor personality conflicts into screaming national headlines.

They have an absolute gift for this kind of thing.

And it's all over Con ideology.
