Toronto Star: Travers: Failed experiment dooms RCMP boss

Bill Elliott’s days are numbered.

Reprisals against internal critics can’t save the RCMP commissioner from the damning conclusions that he failed to restore order to a dysfunctional force and is now a liability Stephen Harper can’t afford.

Losing his temper and bullying subordinates wasn’t Elliott’s worst mistake. His fatal error was failing to advance urgent reforms fast enough to justify the Prime Minister’s radical decision to appoint the first civilian to lead the storied Mounties.

Controversial when announced in 2007, Harper’s choice of a bureaucrat with no policing experience and a Tory background is now an embarrassment with implications stretching beyond Canada. Elliott’s dictatorial management style and the resulting mutiny are focusing unwanted domestic and international attention on the shaky leadership of this country’s security services.
