Ignatieff resigns after Liberal defeat
Michael Ignatieff announced Tuesday morning he is resigning as Liberal leader after presiding over the most devasting defeat in his party's history.

He made the announcement one day after Stephen Harper's Conservatives were vaulted to majority status in the House of Commons.

Under Mr. Ignatieff, the Liberal party that governed the country for much of the past century came a distant third behind Jack Layton's bounding New Democrats. Mr. Ignatieff also lost his Toronto-area seat.

Mr. Ignatieff told reporters he has asked deputy leader Ralph Goodale to convene a meeting of the party's caucus for next week.
