Jack and Stephen: Kings of the Hill
During his victory speech on election night, Prime Minister Stephen Harper praised NDP Leader Jack Layton with a warmth usually reserved for an old friend.

“I think I can speak for the entire country in recognizing the determination and tenacity of Mr. Layton and his remarkable campaign,” said a smiling Harper, as Conservative supporters inside Calgary’s Telus Convention Centre cheered their new political rival.

“This is a day, friends, for which the NDP has long worked. Mr. Layton should feel proud and I look forward to working with him in Ottawa.”

As Harper basked in the glory of his majority out West, Layton was in Toronto, reveling in his own dawning coup. Under his direction, the NDP won a record 102 seats, catapulting Layton into a watershed role for his party: leader of the official opposition.
