United North America
Last night I met up with some politically like-minded people and one of them mentioned that there's an organized movement to amalgamate Canada and the U.S.

Not suprising I guess but I had never thought or heard about this before. So I did some googling today and came across this website

http://www.unitednorthamerica.org/procon.htm

I checked out their discussion board and there seems to be a pretty balanced range of opinions.

Anyone else heard about this organized movement?

1. I'm in California, and maybe being "Southwest United North America"
would be cool, if I can be as Canadian as I am American.

You know, something like and =

4. Yeah, that would be cool
Unfortunately I think this is more a right wing movement.

Yes I'm Canadian. Born here, lived here all my life. What do you find suprising?

5. I lived in Canada several years
but really I'm suprised you would want anything to do with this government or believe half the stuff on that site; lower taxes, more jobs, national elections etc. Come on Cnanda's doing much better than we are, I'd think you'd want it to stay that way

I should have made it clear that I DO NOT support or agree with this proposal at all.

My reason for posting was that though I'm aware of conservatives in this country that think the U.S. is wonderful, I wasn't aware that there is an organized movement afoot to amalgamate and find that quite threatening. I'm now interested in finding out more about this in order to OPPOSE it.

Hope this clarifies my position.

Edited to add: Welcome to D.U.! :toast:

8. Yes, I agree
That's what I find so frightening about it. Spreading disinformation and the idea that it would be "good" to join with the U.S.

12. Like we want your distribution of wealth? I mean the USA is right
up there with Mexico & Russia! Ha ha ha ha ha!

Canada has done really, really well for itself. We have tons of resources and we have tons of big cities and all the goods we need. We even have Walmart. The tariffs have been mostly erased between the two countries because of NAFTA. Oh - and we get all of our manufactured goods from China! Just like you.

The only thing amalgamation will do is make every Canadian get a smaller share of the resources we will sell to the emerging democracies (democracies like India, China, Russia, Brazil).

Our heath care is gorgeous. Our cities pretty safe. Still pretty safe. 45 murders in Montreal last year. For a city of 3Million... let's see how many were killed in Philidelphia? Oh - 400 murders!!

That whole page is propaganda. Yes the USA would gain allot from us - we have resources and we have educated people. But do not pretend your system of government is better than ours - because it is not. We see our PM have to answer question on the floor of the House 4 days a week. Our rich can have 4 houses (one for each season) and enjoy that. And if they make a million, they pay 300,000 in taxes. And the rich never get entrenched and they do not control parliament. Our last PM grew up in a small Quebec town and was a street-fighter as a kid.

Perhaps Russia would like to join with you and give you all of its resource wealth so you could sell it to China. Maybe Brazil wants to become part of the US so that you could take all their resources and sell it back to them.

Please... grow up! The only country that has ever invaded us or made plans to invade us is you.

Would you like to come to dinner to my house. I'll cook you a nice meal and then you could become part of my family.. and then you could walk off with all of my wealth and silver and the mortgage on my home... and it would be so much fun. You could call if you wanted the flooring in my dinning room. You could then give the work of mining those tiles to your guys. You could pay me a bad price for them and then resell them to someone else. Please could I be in your family?

It seems that the USA is struggling these days with the loss of empire and the loss of wealth inherent in competition world-wide. The middle east is no longer available to pillage (too may islamist fundies created). So they turn the USA into a predatory machine and its people into tribes who squabble with each other and stay out of the War business of the USA.. and then elites will march right into Canada and take all of what we have? And integration would take ten years and then the elites would have the resources... it would not help the guy on the street! The only way to make sure that the wealth of the corporations makes it into the hands of Americans in general is to make sure there is an adequate transfer of wealth every generation. That means good schools, and great technology and all the rest. Because corporations no longer provide jobs - to Americans. That is also the only way to make sure that elites do not get too powerful and ruin the American Brand.

This lot has already done much damage outside the Middle East. If they keep it up... well who in their right mind wouldn't run to China and Russia and say Mommy!

I say it is time for Canada to divest of the USA and encourage trade with China. It is after all the people who are making all the goods. Americans don't have those jobs anymore.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo.

scare tactic to get Canada to join with missile defense. As per usual this WH does not care how it messes up the democracy of the people they ask to help them. Turkey, Spain. Perhaps the Liberals do not want to loose power - SHAME ON THEM!

BREAKING NEWS: A big huge cloud of bullshit is rolling in from the USA. Rumours of an imminent invasion/take over will be used to break the spirit of the Canadian ... and get them to acquiesce to each and every wish of the sociopaths in the Bush White House. All CBC radio reporters will be disappeared. When asked for a statement Condi Rice exclaimed: "we told them that we would not stop until democratic reform started in Canada... it is obvious that communists and anti-Americans are rampant in our norther neighbor and Canadians will give cover and sustenance to Osama bin Laden if we do not destroy each and ever Liberal. Besides that our radar shows regular F-16 flying in V formations crossing the board every September and flying obvious reconnaissance missions to the lake districts in the south and then return to bases in the Canadian north every spring - so secret that even our sattelites can only pick up geese on ponds a shit. A full out invasion is imminent. America reserves the right to defend itself. Canadians are slackers when compared to the United States and defense ... why they fought Hitler for two years longer than we did and ... that was real uppity of them. This will be made to stop".

Ha ha ha ha!

17. LOL, thanks for that
needed the levity. The scary thing is, I have relatives that really do fall for the fear mongering the U.S. puts out and I'm sure there are lot's of other people that do as well. If there really is an effective group of people that are organized and pushing for this crap we have to be able to counter it. As you can see my communication skills aren't that great ;) but I'd like to find out more and "know my enemy".

9. .
"Looking towards the south (within 100 miles for 90% of Canada's population), I think it is quite apparent that there is a greater amount of prosperity, a greater amount of opportunity educationally and commercially, as well as a more advanced and larger transportation, technology, science, health, military, and recreational infrastructures."

Don't confuse "standard of living" with quality of life.

"Canada with its sparse population can never achieve the greatness that the United States has with its 280 million souls. Likewise, North America will never realize its full potential until the people of this continent, who once lived united as one people, re-unite for the betterment of us all. It is that simple, yet profound idea, which compels me to advocate for a United North American nation"

Look deeper. Start here.

I should have been clearer in my original post that I'm AGAINST this proposal.

Read the book "Fire and Ice" and did their on-line survey. Apparently I'm an Autonomous Rebel!

18. Canada's economy is doing better than the U.S.
Canada has lower crime and less of a race problem. Canada should be the model for any united country. If it's going to happen then it should be that individual U.S. states will apply for Confederation to join Canada.

19. This kind of crap has been going on for decades
it never will go anywhere. It is always a 'rump' group that tries to restart the debate, one really has to wonder why. Canada and the US are fundamentally different and will remain so.

The ones to really watch are the John Manleys who have been working with a group to slowly reduce Canada's autonomy by amalgamating border control, more agreements under NAFTA, etc.
