Here's the floor of the House of Representatives in 1798. Vermont Republican (D-R, Jeffersonian forerunner of the Dem party) Roger Griswold canes Connecticut Federalist Matthew Lyon, who then comes back at Griswold with fireplace tongs....
Here's Rep. Preston Brooks (D-SC) going into the Senate chamber to club Charles Sumner (R-MA) to a bloody, unconscious pulp over an anti-slavery speech...
There are other great congressional moments in the history of your hotblooded southern neighbor. The best one might have been a mass melee (over 50 participants) in 1858, north vs. south, which finally ended when Mississippi Rep. (and future Confederate General) Barksdale, upon having his wig pulled off in an attempt to grab him, screamed and caught the attention of the mob, whereby the crowd chose a good joke over a good fight. Barksdale's attacker from Wisconsin held up the wig and said "my God, he's been scalped". Too bad I can't dig up a picture of that one.
