U.S. said to be deeply angered by Martin's comments at climate conference

MONTREAL (CP) - With one day of talks to go at the UN climate conference, desperate efforts to draw the United States into the global effort to curb greenhouse emissions appear to have hit a brick wall, and
Prime Minister Paul Martin is being blamed.

An official with close contacts in the U.S. delegation said any hopes of drawing Washington into the process were killed when Martin pointed a finger of blame at the United States in a news briefing at the conference.

"That was a big mistake," said the delegate, speaking on condition of anonymity Thursday. He said the U.S. delegation, which is directed from Washington by Vice-President
Dick Cheney, was deeply angered by Martin's comments.

In his comments Wednesday, Martin called on all nations to join the global effort to fight climate change, adding: "To the reticent nations, including the United States, I say there is stuch a thing as a global conscience, and now is the time to listen to it."

Pissing off dick cheney a mistake? LOL, not during an election campaign!

C'mon, cheney, if you're so fucking right, let's hear an intelligent response to a germane point. (What's that? Cue the crickets?)

1. Before we criticize anyone else,
I really think we should at least think about cleaning up our own mess. It would be the Canadian thing to do.

3. Nonsense.
If Bush and his team spent 1/4 of the time badgering other nations about global warming as they do about terrorism greenhouse gasses would be cut in half. Consider the importance of having the USA on board and leading this...the influence they can wield.

Of course Canada needs to do much better per capita...but that is a bad reason to stay silent.

2. What an incredibly biased story..
all that yappin' from an anonymous "delegate" who is strongly of the opinion that Martin "killed" chances of getting Bush to care about climate change.

What BS. Bush was never on board, and this was just another excuse to take a fit and go home.

Congratulations to Martin for telling those Aholes the truth....and when served some very light truth in regards to such an incredibly important issue what do they do? Play politics of course.

And yes, Canada has much to do, but we're much smaller and less influential.

5. It's CP, I wouldn't say they're biased
In this case, the whining "delegate" is the story.

4. Nothing more than an excuse by the BUSCHO to ignore climate issues
Uh, yeah, we WERE gonna pay attention and act on it...but Martin pissed us off, so now we all will just have to joke on fumes and die.
PAAALEEEEZZZZZZZZz

6. While it tickles me pink for USA to get bitchslapped here then get huffy
Canada needs a lot of work to do before they become good models for environmental issues.

Number one buddy BLiar has been working on Bush for a year and a half rather publicly on the Kyoto Second Phase? So what is Martin suppose to do?

THe US Admin is ridiculously mess-up...if they really don't like Martin and the LIberals, the last thing they want to do during a Canadian election campaign is drag McKenna on the carpet and grab his lapels, like LBJ did to Pearson so publicly.

Bush probably just gave Martin a couple of points in the poll.

I am trying to stay away from the Press this time--they seem to be taking a much bolder role than usual.

I just get confused if I listen to them.

I was under the impression that the UN conference in Montreal would have been in 'jeopardy' if the government fell and we had a Christmas election or so that was the talking point de jour !!! LOL
