LONDON (Jan. 11) - Twins who were separated at birth got married without realizing they were brother and sister, a lawmaker said, urging more information be provided on birth certificates for adopted children.

A court annulled the British couple's union after they discovered their true relationship, Lord David Alton said.

Alton first revealed details of the unusual case last month during a five-hour debate about a bill that would change regulations about human embryology.

"I was recently involved in a conversation with a High Court judge who was telling me of a case he had dealt with," Alton said according to a transcript of the Dec. 10 debate. "It involved the normal birth of twins who were separated at birth and adopted by separate parents.

"They were never told that they were twins. They met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation."

1. Could have been an ordinary brother and sister pair, not fraternal twins for that matter
So, anybody who was adopted should be told if they had *any* brothers or sisters.

22. .....like in the case of Rudy Giuliani marrying his second cousin
and then got it annulled because he thought she was his third cousin.

8. No, this is the icky part,
and it didn't come from the main subjects under discussion:

"They were never told that they were twins. They met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction,

"Inevitable attraction"?

Is this guy projecting?

9. I hope he didn't mean that in a sexual way
I thought he meant it in the way of feeling of twin bonding in an emotional sense. But how truly awful for the couple. It's very sad. I can't imagine, however, that statistically the odds of this happening are great enough that it, in and of itself, calls for some sort of regulation.

21. Actually, when was the last time you heard of this happening?
1) Twins (fraternal or identical) need to be born
2) They need to be separated
3) They need to meet and fall in love

I don't doubt it happened, but it's statistically rare for a reason.

What sucks is that they love each other, but can't be with each other.

Technically I guess they could if they agreed not to have children (laws notwithstanding).

Bizarre, but tragic nonetheless.

14. I was going to say something about 'Here in Texas'

... but I didn't.

Truly, this was a sad thing for the people involved, and, with what I see as properly available information, it would not have happened to them.

4. I hope they didn't have children.
With that much matching genetic material, their offspring could have serious disabilities.

12. This is actually not uncommon in adoption reunions
It's called "genetic sexual attraction". You can learn more about it here:

13. IVF Problems?

No. Not for this sad couple, as they were normally conceived, separated by adoption at birth, later met.

My worry is that, I am told, not all birth certificates for IVF conceived babies born with donated sperm from sperm banks have information about the father on them. In fact, according to WikiPedia, MOST are anonymous.

It would be nice if one were an IVF conceived person, that one would not have to worry about inadvertent incest.

The father's name, should, I think, be on the birth certificate - with easy access to his basic medical information by the mother and offspring. The same should be true for information about the biological parents of adopted people.

I can empathize with a mother who just wants to give the kid away and forget it ever existed; but, especially with the growing power of genetic medicine, that child has the right to know its biological heritage. Of course, if anonymous adoption were not possible, it is at least possible that a certain number of women would opt for abortion rather than delivery with immediate adoption ...

17. I thought this was debunked.
I read somewhere that the veracity of this story was suspect. This Lord David Alton is somewhat of a right-wing nut job.

20. Lord David Alton

... DOES seem to be the source of this, otherwise undocumented, story.

But I cannot find that it has anywhere been shown to be untrue.

Even it it were, the points raised would still be valid: That adopted, IVF people have a right to know their genetic heritage.
