BA strike: Ban lifted by High Court

Fresh BA strikes look set to go ahead after a panel of senior judges, including the Lord Chief Justice, overturned a ban on industrial action.

BA was granted an injunction on Monday after the High Court ruled that the Unite union had not reported results of its strike ballot correctly to members.

But the panel ruled 2-1 in favour of overturning the injunction.

"We shouldn't have been in this process," said Unite's Derek Simpson. BA was "disappointed" with the ruling.

Strikes are now free to go ahead, possibly from as early as next week.

Good. Regardless of the reasons in this particular strike (I tend towards sympathy with the cabin crew, but that may be because I regard BA management as some of the worst in any industry, rather than the merits of this case), this nit-picking to find any reason to stop a strike, no matter how clear the members' support for it was, was beginning to look like the death of trade unions and lawful strikes.

It had been predicted that the route BA had taken would effectively stop all similar strikes.

2. Thank goodness

The original decision was a piece of shoddy union-busting, plain and simple.

But from BA's reaction it sounds like they're still intent on continuing their masterclass in ineptly vindictive industrial relations.

I've heard conflicting information and views on the merits of the strike - but the ballot result was perfectly clear.
