1. The church is on another witch hunt
to root out evil atheists. The pope has denounced them at length.

2. Ugh.
Especially as there is a theme going around in some British Tory circles (including that notable British Tory, Tony Blair) that evil secularism is harming the country and that religion should have more influence on politics - generally from a socially RW perspective. I think part of this is due to American Republican influences, and part to RW activism within both the Catholic and Anglican churches. If you can bear to read the Torygraph bloggers, some of them are extremely ugly on such topics.

Almost at the same time as the Pope's speech, Sayeeda Warsi gave the following speech to a meeting of Church of England Bishops:

I predict that with time there will be an increasing collaboration of Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim social conservatives against the evil atheists and secularists, not to mention against socially liberal religious people.
