I got lots of anti-immigration comments when I posted on democracyforum.co.uk. Let's see what I get here.

1. I regard any comparisons
Edited on Thu Sep-22-11 08:39 AM by dipsydoodle
between the Gurkhas and any other form of asylum seeker as being completely odious.

The Gurkhas have the distinction of having fought for the UK and as such should be rewarded in any form necessary.

2. I would tend to agree with that.
In any decent country people who are willing to risk their lives for the common good (and the question of whether this or that war was justified is a separate issue) should be rewarded. It will hardly destroy the UK if all Gurkha veterans are given permanent residence, access to the NHS and a decent pension. Of course, their not really white, which maý have something to do with it...

3. If they were British enough to risk their lives for this country...
then they're British enough to be allowed to live here.

I would have thought this simple statement would be uncontroversial even from the point of view of Tories, or of those generally opposed to immigration, but I never cease to be surprised at how mean-spirited some people can be.

6. And that is the beginning and the end of the argument for me ...

We have a growing Nepalese community in our town (my daughter is very
friendly with one of the Nepalese girls at school so has taught me a
number of things about their culture in turn) but of all of the various
immigrants who come to this country, surely the Gurkhas have the most
valid claim to stay?

7. The British state has historically treated them as mercenaries
and certainly treated them as less-than or ultimately non-British.
