What would be the best way for me to get the hell out of the US?
In three years I'll have an advanced degree in law (JD) from a fairly reputable school (top 50) and a ton of student loan debt. I have a wife and small child.

I want to move to the UK in the worst way, but I don't have the finances to do it now. Is it possible for me to just save a ton of money and come over under some scheme I'm not aware of, or is Labour thinking of changing the rules to make it easier/harder anytime soon?

Also, how likely would it be for me to actually use my degree for something in the UK?

1. I, too, am making preparations to leave nazi america....
If you have a goal, you will achieve it - very similar to getting your degree - perseverance, and the drive for freedom (which we now do not have in the usa).

2. Easier than the reverse I believe
I've looked into moving stateside and found it basically impossible. Coming here is currently under review, with a points system likely. A good degree would defintely help under that system.

3. Why not just move to a blue state?
Edited on Wed May-11-05 05:19 PM by noahmijo
I feel the same way here in the putrid disgusting redneck ridden state of Az, but I'm not leaving my country, fuck that, I put too much into this nation to abandon it to let those bastards take over and destroy what we've worked so hard for.

I could see how you might feel this way living in Kentucky, why not try getting out of the south move up north? don't leave us man it's THEM that outta be looking to move to North Korea or Saudia Arabia, you know warm fuzzy places that have the sort of human rights rules they long to have implemented here.

10. I guess since I haven't really put that much into the US...
I suppose that's why I have the urge to settle elsewhere.

But I understand your point. I just don't see anything good happening anytime soon. I mean, Bush won again despite all of his lies and ignorance. It is almost as if we prefer faux-religious idiots running things, so long as they kill a lot of foreigners and pretend to pray in public.

Being in college at this time really opened my eyes to how quasi-fascist the kids are these days (I spent a few years out of school so I'm about five years older than most of the kids in class). These people are lining up to turn "our great republic" into a theocratic police state, pure and simple.

Think about this: if the Dems couldn't beat a war criminal who lied about the Iraq War and cannot speak coherently, how can we beat a republican in 2008 who may actually form complete sentences and has no Iraq War baggage?

The Republicans have successfully tied a mutated version of Christianity to conservatism in the minds of millions. Whether I live in Kentucky or Illinois makes little difference...the more poor families experience firsthand the tragedy of losing a loved one in Iraq, the more likely it is that they will run toward this perverted interpretation of Christianity. For every Lila Lipscomb, there are about 10 who will refuse to accept that their loved one died for a lie.

13. Don't committ yourself
just come over to Britain for a while. Get homesick just go home. I also think its valuable to live in another society and culture to get a different perspective on life society, and community

I want to leave the UK but only for a couple of years.

Come into the 'freeworld', get refreshed, take a break from theo-fascism, tell the right wing bigots in this country whats happening to your beloved homeland, recharge your batteries, then go home and kick ass.

New perspectives, new ideas, and a knowledge that another world is possible.

(You'll also be able to drink real beer while here)

5. Despite all the right-wing rhetoric

that New Labour spouts about controlling immigration (mainly to placate Middle England) I can't see it being difficult for an educated American to settle here (as long as the current economic prosperity continues - which hopefully it will if Gordon Brown becomes PM).

On edit: The U.S. is a big country though, I guess there's plenty of "blue" places to go to. Maybe there's a niche market there - advising Americans who want to emigrate to Canada, UK etc about alternatives within the U.S...

6. Join the Army.
You'll be shipped off to Eye-Rack or who knows where in no time coupled with an extended tour of duty that should keep you out of the States for, oh, 15 years, minimum.

7. Stop, turn right, profit from CRIME til RICH, simmer in politics, then STAY
Why leave? The wealthy LOVE it here, plenty of cheap services, IF you have millions. Your problem is that your conscience prevents you from doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to gain entrance into the ranks of the rank rich society.

12. What?
So you're saying that we should all just stay on the plantation and
get whipped to death by the corporatocracy? Of course they hate free
slaves... but it hardly makes them right.

Ok, i'll ask, if that's what you're referring to. Dear poor and
victemized americans, if you're feeling a bit imposed upon, leave.
Your pensions won't be worth shit, your kids will be sent to die in
criminal wars, and you'll work long hours and break up your family
due to work-stress... or you can get your feet walkin' and get the
hell out to a civilized place, where your investment in society will
be worth its weight later in life.

Don't get angry, get even. Are you ready to leave when you get sick of
the slavery?.... .. "there" You were asked.
