People are always shocked at how much more things cost here than in the States. I was absolutely floored when I moved here in 1986 at how quickly my savings began to drain away, even though I lived frugally. Back then the exchange rate was roughly $1.65 to £1. It's currently at about $1.82 to the pound, so even worse for Americans coming over here.

If you decide to come permanently, you'll need a bankroll for financial security until you get settled into work (assuming you're qualified to work legally here - there are rules about that, but they're probably not the same as what they were in 1986, and I'm "legal" now so I don't keep up with the changes).

It's all been worth it though. I've said elsewhere on DU that my quality of life is better here overall, and I'm not nearly as anxious as I used to be. I love the UK and would find it hard to go back to the USA.
