This is a post in support of our Southerners
I know there are scores of sane Southerners and many apologies for lumping you in with the loonies. Pat yourselves in the back for fighting the good fight - I stand with you.

2. Thanks
My Mom was a poll watcher in Florida in Volusia County and we campaigned hard here in Georgia. We won my county (DeKalb), but I think that Georgia was further screwed by the anti-Gay marriage amendment.

I think I need a button or avatar that says "this Southerner did not vote for Shrubya."

11. we are used to it
being down trodden that it.

There was a bumper sticker years ago that said, "I'm from NC, but I didn't vote for Jessie Helms".

Remember when civil rights passed, LBJ said he had handed the R's the south for the next 50 years? Well, aren't we about 40 years into his prediction? Also, evangelism will be cycling out. Look at it over the years and it comes and goes, just like everything else. The Y2K fraud scared a bunch of idiots, so we are still feeling that effect too.

I think God may be setting us up for the first woman president. :)

But you know what, the election is NOT over. Flordia and Ohio are not in. :)

5. Thanks! It hard to be a Dem in the South (NC)
I am seriously considering never voting again as it seems to be a waste of time.

My Mom lives in OH and if I ever vote again I might consider registering there if that is possible.

28. Not a waste of time here...
When our candidates respond to negative attacks immediately and effectively, we CAN and do--win.

If we run a candidate who appeals to Southerners actively--and doesn't leave it to his running mate to do so--we can win here.

If we have someone who stands up for the average citizen and not the wealthy--despite being attacked for her lifestyle (please see my post below) we CAN win here.

Please stay registered here--you're needed here a LOT more!:D

My fellow Dems and I have worked ourselves to the point of physical exhaustion in this election. I'm very proud to say that my county, (Shelby Co., TN) went to Kerry by 15%, although it didn't save our state...

You may not have seen it yet, but I took issue with one of your posts on an earlier thread this morning out of frustration at being labeled, ridiculed and attacked by others on this board during the past few hours.

Now I know you were also speaking out of frustration in that previous thread. That makes me appreciate even more your kind words and initiative in starting this thread!

16. Thanks from a Southerner
It makes me sick to see all the electoral votes in the southeast going for Bush, and I am dismayed and disheartened by the results in this region. There are a lot more like me down here.

Don't forget, many of the voters in southern states (particularly in the big city suburbs) are right-wing Yankees who moved here because they wanted to be with their backward kind.

I stand against them, and the ignorant rednecks, and the homophobic black preachers (fortunately most are too smart to fall for the Republican line), and the frightened "security moms" who--despite all evidence to the contrary--think Bush's policies have made their families safer.

Take a look at the county-by-county maps on CNN and you'll see that in every "Red" state there are enclaves of Democratic support. Those of us living in the belly of the beast appreciate the shout-outs from our compatriots all around the country. It will take a lot of us working together patiently over a long period of time to turn this situation around.

of thinking they ran me off.

this is my home, not theirs. and if being a thorn in the side of some smartass, backwards f*cks is my role, then so be it.

we need more progressives and liberals down here. not in the northeast, illinois, and california. there, democrats overwhelm the opposition.

we need blue state people to move here and help us take back the red states.

I've seen and heard too many comments about people wanting to move from red states to blue states. The end result of that would be to furhter marginalize the electoral vote. Remember folks, realignment of the House only happens after the census is taken every 10 years.

23. I am a Kerry supporter from Tennessee
The democrats will never take the south if they never invest any time or noney here. We were ignored by the presidential campaign..no Edwards no Wes Clark. We couldn't even get campaign supplies at our HQ.
I notified the Kerry campaign and the Tennessee Dem HQ in early September begging to go to work and there were others just like me here. We never heard a word from either of them.
I worked hard anyway, registering voters and volunteering at the campaign HQ.
I live in a town of 15,000 people and I remember the Day Bill Clinton and Al gore stood on out courthouse steps. Grant you Kerry is no Bill Clinton but I think trotting Edwards thru some of the southern states could have made a difference.
We will never take the south if we never even try.

I'd hoped, too, that today would be a new beginning for ALL of us--right now I'm not at all sure that's to be, and I HURT for ALL of us for that reason. I'm deeply dissappointed in North Carolina not voting for our native son for Vice President, as capable a man as he is--but John Edwards WILL serve this nation again, just watch! I'm also very dissappoinnted in Erskine Bowles not beating Richard Burr, but Erskine WILL have the opportunity to serve this state in a major office in the future, I'm also convinced!

However:

Yesterday, in New Hanover County (Wilmington) N.C., we elected the first openly gay state senator in North Carolina history, Julia Boseman. And ads for her Repub opponent, which were based upon those "cultural issues" (i.e. theme that she was a "mean ol' lesbun") were what helped to turn the tide here in her FAVOR.

In doing so, Julia's presence will help to increase the Dem. majority in our state Senate, and will help Gov. Mike Easley (who defeated a Repub former state senator from here, ironically) a better chance at getting a fairer state budget, and maybe even a state lottery through, in his second term.

I feel good that our efforts here locally helped to elect Julia, and to give us a sharp young guy named Ben David as our new District Attorney, too. We also put a Democrat back on our formerly all-Repub County School Board, a terrific lady, a former principal who also becomes the first African-American on that board in awhile.

So..fellow DUers from other areas of this great nation, let's not hang our heads for too long. Remember, the South (or at least PARTS of it!:eyes: ) CAN be taken by a Democrat; Bill Clinton proved that in '92 AND '96. And, with the right (NOT right-wing) message, a candidate can appeal to the core constitutncies of our Party AND the broad mainstream of Americans, and win. It happened before; it WILL happen again--as soon as 2008, I'm thinking!:D

:kick:

Virginia is still a red state, but we made a dent in it.
Touch screen voting (Not Diebold)
7 voters did not select any candidate. (may not have understood machine)
Including our absentee votes, we had almost 3,000 votes this election.
Most of our voters came out early in the day and stood in line for as long as 2 hours. We had only a trickle after 2:00. No one was in line to check-in at the pollbooks at 7:00. Only about a dozen were in line to get to the machines.

27. Oh please
the folks bashing the south should just come up here and visit the Pennsylvania that lives between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, or visit our lovely republican suburbs. (Although why pick on PA? My guess is the folks in rural/suburban NY, MA, etc., fit some of the same profiles)

Huge concentrations of hate groups.

Catholic priests driving oldsters to the polls to be sure they can vote "pro-life" (let's not bash fundamentalists when we have a "pro-life" anti-gay monolith flourishing in our Northeast midst)

Hunting as a second religion, leading to a worship of guns (not anti-hunting, just why are these people so damned obsessed with it?)

So before folks start taking it all out on the South, we should look at our own idiots.

(Although please feel free to bash NASCAR, which has few if any redeeming qualitites)

34. Thanks from Atlanta
I live in the Bubble of Midtown and sat with my mouth open last night watching the results. My partner and I thought there was no way that son of a ..... would win again. I know that there is a huge difference between Atlanta and Georgia but it really is depressing. I went to the restaurant I work at last night to watch the results. Our clientele is about 90% gay. I asked one of my regular bar customers if he voted and he said "No, I'm not really a Kerry supporter. I was just against Bush so I felt that I shouldn't vote." We would not be having this problem if Dean had been our candidate. At least he held a rally here. Kerry never even showed his face once.

36. Nice post. The good people of the South need our support.
They stand for progressive values in the face of institutionalized bigotry unimaginable to this Yankee.

All too often the Southerners on this board have been very unfairly lumped together with the nutballs they have to constantly deal with.
