Conyers: stop crushing our mailbox
The following message was forwared to us last night. It speaks for itself.

If you would like to substitute e-mailing to Conyers for tormenting Republicans, please come to http://www.usvip.org and help with our action request.

Thanks

Dear Ms. XXXX,

Our office has appreciated the response it has received regarding the voting problems in Ohio, however these emails while send with the best of intentions are clogging our email and requiring us to spend hours filtering these emails into the proper folders. We as democrats can talk about election reform, but in the House it is Majority rules and the only people who can really reform the voting process to ensure each vote is accurately counted are the Republicans.

If activists focused their efforts on getting R.'s to work for some kind of voting reform that would help the cause much more. I encourage you to contact your member of Congress, and if you like the Judiciary R.'s (although Members of Congress often only read respond to their own constituents communications), to support election reform and transparency.

Sincerely,

Matthew M. Thome
Representative John Conyers, Jr.
Legislative Correspondent

30. I don't think so. I know I acted on it even though I couldn't verify,
but, in the absence of leadership, we become the leaders.

Now we know what Conyers wants (notice, we only got it in the negative? Rolling my good eye). Well, now we can do that.

My point is, if the leadership weren't a twinkie short of a pair, this would be a smoother process. Better, apparently there are enough of us to wax the car. Onto the next car.

If he is already working on it what difference would all the emails make?

We shouldn't email him unless we have important information to share.

11. Why would Conyers wants tons of email in the first place?
If they are merely emails of support why would he request them?
I understand that if people have important info they should share it, but I don't understand a blanket request for supportive email. What good would that do?

It says Rep. Conyers asked us to email THE HOUSE. As you know the HOuse is made up of both Republicans and Democracts. SO there you have it. That's why I posted that. IT seems someones trying to kill this...or confuse us. I'm going to send emails to both. I would think if they didn't want emails, they wouldn't have posted it on their webpage TODAY. Once again go to the Green party page and see for yourself...

45. As one of the people who helped this along...
It's been broadcast several times on public radio in my area, and so I passed it along here, but with a "?." The message was that Conyers wanted 1 million emails of support for full Congressional hearings.

I also called Conyers' office to see what they wanted, and posted it here, in the same forum: "Conyers asks for 1 million emails re forum/hearings?"

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=156204&mesg_id=156204

The aide I spoke to (unfortunately didn't get a name) said, yes, Conyers wants full hearings; no, they had not put out call for 1 million emails, but, yes, they welcome all letters of support; and no, full hearings, if they happen, probably won't be soon, not before Jan. 20 (long term project).

On the basis of these answers, we discussed strategy and priorities at the above forum, that first priorities right now are: to encourage House Dems (including Conyers) to petition to the Senate on Jan. 6 not to certify Ohio, to encourage Senate Dems to sign the petition, and also to give Conyers support for full hearings (and praise for the forums and other investigative actions).

I have suspicions about the above email (from Matthew M. Thome), not just because of the mispellings, but because Congressional emails are set up to receive volume, and do automatic sorting by "topic." But the advice given is not bad--hit the Republicans!

I will call Conyers office back tomorrow morning (Wed. 12/16) for a clarification. (I doubt this is "dirty tricks" stuff--if anything, just miscommunication.)

Here's Repub head of House Judiciary--to pressure for full hearings:

Chairman: F. James Sensenbrenner, JR. (R-Wisc.) sensenbrenner@mail.house.gov - Tel: (202) 225-5101

He does not want 1 million emails. Believe me. Please. We got 4,000 today. 4,000 yesterday. The House email system is pretty bad and it slows down all of our computers.

We appreciate your enthusiasm and it is really encouraging to know that so many people have our backs. But we get it! We're in this for the long haul and we are with you. Go work on the folks who are not.

As for Matt's email, my guess is he was typing a quick informal note that he hoped would get around. As you can probably imagine, one man getting 4,000 emails a day doesn't have a lot of time to proofread.

58. Sorry I got in on this thread so late....
I'm one of the DUers who was really trying to push to get an organization such as MoveOn (True Majority looked even more promising) to carry through with the 1 million email effort. The recent letter from the Conyers office seems disappointing. Here is one of the postings that had originally called for the emailings:

http://www.commongroundcommonsense.org/index.php?showtopic=10075&hl=

Also I'm sure I heard Conyers mention this request in one of the interviews he gave last week.

I wonder if the problem was that they were receiving too many duplicate postings from the same people. Or possibly disruptive emails were being sent in the same way that freepers try to take over Democratic online boycotts?

Anyway, I believe that the intent was that they wanted to hear from a sizeable enough portion of the population in order to justify starting a full hearing.

The latest allegations of criminal activity on behalf of the GOP sound important enough that they may well decide to proceed. I haven't been keeping up with the news enough to know for sure, but this looks very interesting:

60. not meaning to disappoint
but I think we have a misunderstanding here.

Conyers does not need a single email to be supportive of this effort. He obviously is. However, we welcome any tips, comments, or complaints by email, phone or whatever. We just don't need people emailing for the sake of helping us reach some goal we do not have.

IMHO, efforts are best focussed on people who are not 100% supportive than people who are.

62. I understand and I agree....
but that is exactly what an organization with a comprehensive mailing list such as that of True Majority is capable of: reaching those who are not paying attention to politics because the election is over, or perhaps because of the holidays.

I understand that Rep. Conyers is already supportive of this effort, but I thought the goal was to create a bipartisan effort within the judiciary committee. Is this still feasible?

I agree that the activists should not be sending out repetitive form letters over and over.

64. Conyers needs to show lots of emails, not for "Conyers" support
but to show Sensenbrenner, to gain credibility and support from populous for the investigations. This is the equivalent of Ukrainians marching in the streets.

I find the email very flaky. A college student does not make the kind of writing errors made in that email. This looks a continuum of the 5th grade grammar we're seeing from the freepers.
