NC Election: "Democrats ask Cobb to drop protest"
http://www.news14charlotte.com/content/top_stories/around_carolina/?SecID=211&ArID=82151

RALEIGH, N.C. - A dozen Democrats asked fellow party member and Agriculture Commissioner Britt Cobb on Tuesday to withdraw his election protest to avoid a new statewide race with Republican Steve Troxler.

In a letter to Cobb, who trails Troxler by 2,287 votes, the Democrats -- many of them Piedmont-area farmers -- said they "were greatly disturbed" by Cobb's legal appeals in the weeks following the Nov. 2 election.

"Please do not attempt to avoid an election defeat by using lawyers to fight the results in court," the letter read.

John Kerry and John Edwards conceded graciously after the presidential election, they wrote, and "the people of North Carolina are now urging you to see the same handwriting on the wall in this circumstance."

Both Cobb and Troxler had appealed a decision by the State Board of Elections that called for a special election in Carteret County because 4,438 ballots were lost -- more than the current difference between the candidates.

2. four thousand ballots lost. and to think some people don't believe in
the death penalty.

how the hell can you call it an election if 4000 ballots are lost, how about there needs to be a new election. and who the hell is it in the dem party that is telling him to "get over it". maybe they need to move over to the repugs.

you know nader might be on to something, maybe I wasted my vote in 2000.

I think those are Dixiecrats, it being North Carolina. You don't actually have to believe in Dems principles or vote Dem; you just have to be registered Democrat. Many Republican voters in the South are still registered Dems.

5. DINOs.
I'm just disgusted that some people think it is no big deal that 4,000 (or 94K) people stood in line for no reason at all. The Greens are looking better every day.

7. It seems unlikely that the lost ballots ...
Would be enough to change the result.

It seems likely that a court challenge might hurt the Dem's in the long run. (But it's NC so who cares?)

It also seems like there should be 4,438 people that should be mad as Hell about this.

More and more it's becoming obvious that we need a constitutional right to vote and to have our votes counted. Screw having the Democrat look bad just because he wants to stand up for the "lost".

All 4,438 people should be able to bring suit whether the Dem's or Repub's like it or not.

10. Democrats are now the enemy.
It seems Kerry is spearheading a campaign to let Repugnicans steal every vote possible. I'm going Green. This behavior by Dems is making me sick.

14. This letter has nothing to do with Kerry
or the Democratic Party.

Some Piedmont farmers who supposedly are Democrats wrote a letter. So?

12. The letter doesn't reflect the view of the North Carolina Democratic Party
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 05:07 PM by FloridaCrat
Read further in the article - the letter was written by people who claim to be Dems, but....

"The letter doesn't reflect the view of the North Carolina Democratic Party.

The party "fully supports the Cobb campaign's legal efforts," said Schorr Johnson, a state party spokesman. The party has covered to date all the legal costs -- more than $50,000 -- for the campaign of Cobb and June Atkinson, the Democratic candidate for superintendent of public instruction."

edited to add to the above paragraph.

The title of this post is slightly inflammatory and smells funny.

13. Pubs in NC can get pretty dirty
Wouldn't surprise me if they were behind this.

I am really starting to hate my state. 4000 lost votes here, mysterious technicians there.

But as we all know, the liberals hate Christmas.

15. I just emailed the following to News 14 - living in NC for the moment
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 06:33 PM by GetTheRightVote
Not everyone is bad down here, thank you for the posting:

Thank you News 14 for this report - Democrats ask Cobb to drop protest

I agree with the Democratic candidate that every vote should be counted and counted correctly.
The many election problems that NC has had this year demands that he follow the path he is taking to ensure our Democracy is true to itself and its citizens. Money should not be the deciding factor in an election or our Democracy is lost to us. If the election officials do not do their job then the state must make up for it. The state should not harm a candidate due to clerical error, this leads one to believe that the error may have been created intentionally. Now this we do not wish the citizens of this great nation to believe do we ??? So as an individual living in Charlotte, I back Agriculture Commissioner Britt Cobb and June Atkinson, the Democratic candidate for superintendent of public instruction in their legal attempts in seeing that the state of North Carolina live up to this promise and not tarnish its image by putting montetary value or concerns over the principles which make up the back bone of our Democracy which must be considered priceless.

Britt and June go on right ahead and fight the good fight of Democracy, I got your back.

Regards,

Ms.
Charlotte, NC
