This is an expanded version of a post I just put on another board. I want to be sure that as many Democrats as possible understand what we are up against.
I have lived in North Carolina for 25 years, and those are just a fraction of the years that Senator Jesse Helms - one of the vilest people to ever walk the earth imo - held onto power.
Bushco is making good use of the Helms strategy, as are Republican senate and congressional candidates all over the country. Many former Helms operatives now work for bushco.
Jesse Helms was never defeated in NC. We as Democrats need to recognize the nature of the beast we fight. I believe that we will prevail, but we can't do it unless we are informed.
Briefly, Helms used the following 10 point strategy:
1. Scare people into voting for your candidate.
2. Appeal to the electorate's basest lizard-brain instincts.
3. Make up blatant and atrocious lies about your opponents.
4. Limit your candidate's exposure to media and the public to hide the truth about you candidate's positions and beliefs.
5. Make up strengths that the electorate will like and attribute them to your candidate even if they are the opposite of the truth.
6. Make judicious gifts of pork to special interest groups and raise tons of money in return.
7. Bully, bribe, and intimidate the media into supporting your candidate no matter what. Punish any strays by any means possible.
8. Brutally suppress the vote in communities that support your opponent.
9. Pretend that your candidate and all his staff are fundamentalist Christians.
10. Appoint and support high-profile "Uncle Toms" and self-loathers representing all types to your team.
Oh yeah. And don't forget to play the abortion card.
