Iraq Rejects U.S. Talk of Adjusting Vote Result

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/nm/20041226/ts_nm/iraq_election_dc

By Luke Baker

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq (news - web sites)'s election body rejected a suggestion in Washington it adjust the results of next month's vote to benefit the Sunni minority if low turnout in Sunni areas means Shi'ites win an exaggerated majority in the new assembly.

Speaking of "unacceptable" interference, Electoral Commission spokesman Farid Ayar said: "Who wins, wins. That is the way it is. That is the way it will be in the election."

U.S. diplomats in Baghdad, at pains to keep their role in the election discreet, declined comment on a New York Times report from Washington which said Sunnis might be granted extra seats if the community's vote was judged to have been too low.

U.S. officials have expressed concern that if the ballot on Jan. 30 fails to reflect Iraq's sectarian and ethnic mix due to violence and boycotts in Sunni areas, then the assembly will lack legitimacy. But any attempt to fix the proportion of seats going to the main groups in advance could have the same effect.

"The Americans are expressing their views and those aren't always the same as the Commission's," Ayar told Reuters.

6. Who in the U.S.? Adjusted? Unbelievable.
I'd like the Mondale-Coleman 2002 election adjusted to account for the right wing propaganda number created out of the Memorial Service? Or can I have it adjusted to say that they should have just given it to Mondale in memory of Wellstone?

Let's have a few county elections re-voted to adjust for the bigotry of election tactics in the U.S.

8. Regardless of how they count the votes....I expect the eventually elected
official will somehow be the one that speaks fluent English and will be anxious to work with "Meester Boosh". (Smile for the camera)

They have a lot to learn about western democracy and the Buxh white house.

10. Saddam's Out. Diebold, et. al. are in.
I figured this "Spread Democracy" charade is based on their ability to hack the vote.

11. Yummy! adjust overall vote for ethnic vote suppression?
So if Sunni's can't vote because their polls are being shot at, then you 'adjust' the totals to reflect how it would be if they had been able to vote.

If the same idea caught hold here, then you would be analyzing disenfranchisement at black and native-American areas where voter intimidation, ID issues, insufficient machines and vote spoilage suppressed ethnic groups. Then multiply the votes cast in such districts by the 'suppression factor' to derive the true will of the people - had they all been allowed to vote.
