Are early returns mostly rural?
It seems to me that the precincts reporting early would likely be smaller precincts, i.e. in rural areas. They would finish counting sooner and report their results while the more populated precincts, i.e. in urban areas, would report their results later since they have more votes to count.

In which case, Kerry's results will be getting even stronger as the night goes on since the urban vote is expected to lean heavily in his favor.

Makes perfect sense to me. Does anyone know anything about it?

1. I do believe that is the way of it...
If I remember correctly from past elections... urban areas take longer cuz 1) more people = long lines at polls = later poll closing and 2) More people = more ballots to count.

2. depends on the type of voting machines
Newton Co AR is one of the most rural in the state, and was usually counted last when we simply marked an x in the box. Now we use optical scanners, and usually submit our votes by 10. In AR at least, the more metropolitan areas are counted first.

3. That makes sense...
I hadn't really thought of that. I used to vote in a Detroit suburb and they've had touch-screen since 1996. Now I'm in the boonies (pop. 1,100) and they had the optical scanner kind.

4. Varies from State to State
For example in my Home state of Pa, the Rural (generally GOP) votes comes in late, long after Pittsburgh and Philadelphia had posted their results. Thus in Pa rural votes come in last not first.

5. CNN.com has a great map
shows breakdowns by county of how many votes for each, which counties have reported, etc.

7. In most of the states that I played with on CNN,
rural counties post results first. Generally.
